Newbury - 15:15: Back Real Gain

Richard Hughes has started the season well and he's currently 6-18 at 33% going into Newbury, and his Real Gain is the selection for the big Spring Cup.

Last September he looked a potential Pattern performer winning a 0-90 at Newmarket in easy fashion. He hacked up by 5L and caught the eye very much with the way he travelled.

He was even better with the way he picked up inside the final couple of furlongs and surged away from the field clocking two of the fastest sectionals easily.

It was good to firm on times that day at HQ, and drying ground looks key as he was bogged down in the soft in the Group 3 Darley Stakes, but it was interesting Hughes thought he was up to that level.

But moved so easily from 91 at HQ, I like him here even if he is off 101 and towards the head of the weights.

Ayr - 15:35: Back Inis Orr

Lucinda Russell's Inis Orr could be the big improver for the Scottish Grand National, and judged on his wide-margin win in the Edinburgh National at Musselburgh, he looks tailor-made for these marathon distances.

His victory at Musselburgh was a whole 21 lengths, making all the running and stamina could well be his forte.

I fancied him and put him up in the column for the Lincolnshire National at Market Rasen in December, but even the 3m4f there at a sharp track wasn't far enough for him.

He's got a hefty rise from 119 to 133, and with only five starts over fences, could be a real force here.
