Southwell - 18:00: Back Engineer

Engineer is able to run in a 0-78 this evening at Southwell despite a rating of 80, and as I never mind backing top weights, he looks one of the more interesting runners on the card.

The 3yo is lightly-raced with just five career starts and ran in a stronger race over 6f at Kempton last time out behind Fire Demon.

He got slightly outpaced in the closing stages there and tried to rally on the inside, but it was certainly a case of the first two holding an advantage up with the speed as they were in the first trio throughout.

In no way was he unlucky and to explore the 7f angle at Southwell looks a positive here judged on that Kempton effort over shorter.

He previously hit a flat spot too in a 0-80, so the trip looks a positive to me.

Rossa Ryan rides for Clive Cox and Ryan is the leading rider at the track with 7-45, while Cox wouldn't have a stack of runners here, but is 6-45 at 13%.

Southwell - 19:00: Back Meng Tian

Newmarket trainer Sean Woods was a touch unlucky not to register a winner last night at Southwell with three of his runners finishing second, second and third.

He was most unlucky with Francesi the grey, he flew home on the stand side against the progressive Endless Power, and we don't need anymore of those seconds for the column.

Meng Tian is well exposed with just 1-19 on the All-Weather but two summers ago he was rated in the 80s, so he is one of the best handicapped runners here, and he hasn't totally lost the plot either as he finished second last time out.

He ran over 1m at Chelmsford last time with a positive ride, and dropping down to 7f with mile stamina at Southwell is something I like for horses on the Tapeta here as they need to stay down the long straight.

It's been a long time since he won a race, and he's off a break here having last been on the track in November, but he does have a win off a 222 day break and I'll go with him at 11/43.75 in a poor race.
