World Cup Round of 32: Opta stats and tips for first knockout matches

Below are a selection of Opta stats and tips for World Cup round of 32. All kick-offs are UK times.

Monday 29 June 18:00 - Brazil v Japan

Vinícius Júnior has netted four goals so far at the FIFA World Cup, already the most by a Brazilian in a tournament since Neymar scored four in 2014, while Ronaldo (8) and Rivaldo (5) were the last to score more in 2002. Ronaldo and Rivaldo in 2002 were also the last players to score in Brazil's first four games at a World Cup, which Vinícius could emulate. 

Monday 21:30 - Germany v Paraguay

Paraguay are yet to score a goal in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup, playing five matches. It's the longest run of knockout games without scoring by any side in the tournament's history.

Tuesday 02:00 - Netherlands v Morocco

Netherlands struck 10 goals during the group stages, their joint-most ever at that stage, alongside the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Across groups A-F at this tournament, the Dutch have netted the joint-most goals in total (10, alongside Germany).

Tuesday 18:00 - Ivory Coast v Norway

Erling Haaland was an unused substitute in Norway's 4-1 defeat to France, meaning he still has the opportunity to be the first player since Hungary's Sándor Kocsis in 1954 to score 2+ goals in each of his first three FIFA World Cup appearances. He's had five shots in each of his first two, with Karim Benzema the last player to have 5+ shots in each of his first three World Cup games back in 2014 for France. 

Tuesday 22:00 - France v Sweden

Sweden have scored seven goals at this year's FIFA World Cup, their most ever in a single group round. Indeed, it's their most at the finals overall since netting 15 in 1994, a year in which they finished third. 

Wednesday 02:00 - Mexico v Ecuador

Julián Quiñones scored in two of Mexico's three 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, while he led all Mexican players for shots (10) and shots on target (4). The only Mexico player to score in three games in a single World Cup is Luis Hernández in 1998.

Wednesday 17:00 - England v DR Congo

Yoane Wissa has scored 75% of Congo DR's goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup (3/4), averaging a goal every 90 minutes in the tournament. This is as many as he netted in the 2025-26 club season for Newcastle United (3), where he averaged a goal every 301 minutes across all competitions.

Wednesday 21:00 - Belgium v Senegal

Ismaïla Sarr has been directly involved in four goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup (3 goals, 1 assist), the joint-most by a Senegal player in a single edition of the tournament (also 4 by Henri Camara in 2002).

Thursday 01:00 - USA v Bosnia

USA have won just one of their last 21 FIFA World Cup meetings with UEFA nations (D7 L13), and are winless in their last 13 (D6 L7) since a 3-2 victory over Portugal in 2002.

Thursday 20:00 - Spain v Austria

Mikel Oyarzabal has been directly involved in three of Spain's five goals at this FIFA World Cup (2 goals, 1 assist). Overall, Oyarzabal has 22 combined goals (15) and assists (7) across his last 15 starts for his country.  

Friday 00:00 - Portugal v Croatia

Portugal have lost just one of their 10 matches against Croatia across all competitions (W7 D2), whilst the Seleção are unbeaten in competitive matches against the nation, winning five of their six encounters (D1). 

Friday 04:00 - Switzerland v Algeria

Five of Switzerland's last nine knockout matches in major tournaments have gone to penalties, with the Swiss getting knocked out in four of those five shootouts. They've won just one of their last 12 knockout matches in 90 minutes (D5 L6), a 2-0 win over Italy at EURO 2024.  

Friday 19:00 - Australia v Egypt

Egypt have scored as many goals in three matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they had in seven games at the finals prior to this year (5). The Pharaohs have had 48 shots and amassed 3.8 expected goals at this year's tournament, their most on record at a single edition (since 1966). 

Friday 23:00 - Argentina v Cape Verde

Lionel Messi has been involved in nine goals in his last five knockout stage appearances at the FIFA World Cup (5 goals, 4 assists), scoring in each of his last four. The only players to score in five knockout appearances in a row are Leônidas for Brazil (1934-38), Gyorgy Sarosi for Hungary (1934-38), and Vavá for Brazil (1958-62). 

Saturday 02:30 - Colombia v Ghana

Colombia have conceded just two goals across their last six FIFA World Cup matches, keeping four clean sheets. Indeed, with a shutout here, they could keep three clean sheets in a row for the first time ever in the competition.  Ghana averaged just 36.1% possession in the group stage of this FIFA World Cup, the second lowest by any side to reach the knockout stages, after Paraguay (33.9%).
