The name O'Higgins is in our bad books this morning, as the Chilean version lost 1-0 at Cobresal to nix our BTTS bet. We'll dip our toe into the glorious waters of the UEFA Europa Conference League now, because Fiorentina are up against Basel, and the Italian hosts are worthy favourites.
Fiorentina are the top scorers in this competition, and they have plenty of firepower. Arthur Cabral and Luka Jovic have scored six goals apiece (no-one in this season's UECL have scored more), while Christian Kouamé and Cristiano Biraghi are right up there when it comes to players in the tournament with the most assists.
La Viola have had a fairly serene passage to the semi-finals, although they did nearly blow it completely in the quarter-finals against Polish side Lech Poznan. 4-1 from the first leg in Poland, Fiorentina relaxed and suddenly found themselves 3-0 down in Florence and level on aggregate, but Vincenzo Italiano's men found another gear and scored two late goals to progress.
In Serie A Fiorentina are eighth, but they have clearly concentrated on this competition, winning just one of their last six matches in the top flight. They are unbeaten in six at home in the league though, and they thrashed hapless Sampdoria 5-0 recently.
Basel have fallen off their perch domestically, with their title drought extended for another season. Extraordinarily for a team with their pedigree, they are currently outside Switzerland's top four, so winning the Europa Conference League might be their only route back into Europe for next season.
Basel did superbly to knock out Nice in the quarter-finals (they grabbed a late leveller in France, and then won that second leg in extra time), but that was one of several scrapes in this tournament. In the last 16, only a last-gasp leveller in the second leg saw them survive against Slovan Bratislava, and they then progressed on penalties.
There should be a big quality gap here, and if you look at the games where Basel have played top teams in Switzerland this term, they have struggled. They have lost twice at Young Boys, and at home they have gone down against Zurich, Luzern (twice), and they have twice been held to draws by old foes Young Boys.
Fiorentina can take a significant first-leg lead here, so I'll use the Bet Builder to back them to win, Over 1.5 Goals, Over 6.5 Corners and Fiorentina to win the Corner Match Bet at 2.166/5. Fiorentina average a league-high 6.3 corners per match in Serie A, and concede just 3.1.
