Gabriel Pires: Set for a busy night

Wednesday's Copa Sudamericana quarter-final looks set up for cards and our football props column is backing a [7/2] shot.

There's another big Argentina v Brazil clash in the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday night - and that usually means cards.

Hosts Defensa, winners of this trophy three seasons ago, will be confident of progression to the semi-finals having earned a 1-1 draw in Rio de Janeiro last week but the Brazilian league leaders will still have plenty to say about that.

Leg 1: Over 5.5 cards

The tie looks set up well for a competitive battle.

Botafogo admittedly don't have a great cards record domestically but in this competition they've averaged close to three per game.

The appointment of referee Jhon Ospina is encouraging, too.

He's shown 37 cards in seven CONMEBOL club appointments this season, an average of more than five per match.

Throw in the country rivalry aspect and I can see him nudging that up and am happy to back over 5.5 cards.

Leg 2: Gabriel Pires to be shown a card

The other price which looks good is the 23/103.30 about Gabriel Pires being one of those booked.

The Botafogo midfielder is only just back from a lengthy injury absence and was cautioned in last week's first leg.

He's a player who was something of a card magnet during his days in Portugal, particularly in the big games.

Gabriel will likely have plenty of work to do, both going forward and back, in this game and it's not hard to see him coming to the referee's attention.
