Galatasaray got the victory we wanted last night, but the fact they beat Molde by a single goal meant it was a push rather than a win. We'll re-invest that stake quickly, because we're heading to Greece for a Champions League qualifier between AEK Athens and Antwerp.
Last season, Antwerp secured their first Belgian league title since 1957, and they did so in incredibly dramatic fashion. Going into the final moments of their last game at title rivals Genk, Antwerp were heading for a 2-1 defeat and the title was slipping out of their grasp. However, in the 90th minute, Antwerp-born veteran Toby Aldeweireld scored a stunning goal that no-one attached to the club will ever forget.
Antwerp have invested heavily in their squad, and reaching the group stage of the Champions League would be an enormous step forward. Antwerp beat AEK Athens 1-0 in the first leg of this playoff tie, as Vincent Janssen netted early, before the Belgians survived the 50th-minute sending-off of defender Jelle Bataille.
Antwerp have taken seven points from their four league matches, and their only defeat so far this term was away to Anderlecht. Opponents AEK edged out Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb in the previous round, but they needed two last-gasp goals to rescue a 2-2 second-leg draw at home and win the tie. In their only league game so far, AEK were held to a 1-1 draw at home to unheralded Panserraikos.
AEK dominated much of the first leg, but the statistics were skewed by the fact they had a man advantage, and I think Antwerp can do enough to qualify for the next phase. We can use the Sportsbook's Bet Builder to back Antwerp to qualify, Under 4.5 Goals and Over 7.5 Corners at 2.26/5.
There were 13 corners in the first leg, and AEK will have to push to get back into the tie, and if you look at the ten competitive games these sides have played between them this term, only one has featured five goals or more.
