31 July - Will Magpies soar or plummet under Jaissle?
Matthias Jaissle, manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, looks set to be Newcastle United's next manager following yesterday's departure of Eddie Howe.
As the dust settles on a whirlwind 24 hours for the north east club, you can read about Jaissle's track record in yesterday's update below. But how have Betfair punters been responding to the news from Newcastle?
The Magpies were backed into 12/113.00 from a high of 33/134.00 for relegation on the Betfair Sportsbook as news of Howe's shock departure broke. Reports that Jaissle, a 38-year-old German who has done well in Austria and Saudi Arabia but nevertheless is a gamble with no Premier League experience, have done nothing to change that.
Bettors agree with Betfair ambassador Alan Shearer who says in his exclusive column that Newcastle face a tough season.
But could Jaissle be a hit at St James' Park? The club's owners have been watching his progress closely at Al-Ahli, which is also owned by the Saudi Investment Fund, and have decided the German has what it takes to succeed in England.
Newcastle finished 12th last season and, while achieving European football will be their aim, finishing anywhere in the top half of the table would be an improvement. They are 1/12.00 to be 10th or above come the end of 2026/27.
Think Newcastle can finish in the top six this season? Back them at 4/15.00. For top five it's 6/17.00 and top four is 14/115.00.
30 July - Jaissle expected to get Newcastle job after shock Howe exit
Matthias Jaissle, manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, raced into pole position to be appointed as Howe's successor at Newcastle.
Betfair punters backed the Magpies into 12/113.00 from a high of 33/134.00 for relegation on the Betfair Sportsbook as news of Howe's shock departure broke this morning.
Betfair ambassador Alan Shearer says in his exclusive column that Newcastle are in for a tough season without Howe.
So who is the 38-year-old German who is expected to be in the St James' Park dugout in 2026/27?
Jaissle started coaching in the Danish league, as assistant manager of Bronby, before taking over RB Salzburg's Under-18 academy team. He went on to coach Liefering in Austria's second tier, before making his name as RB Salzburg manager in 2021, winning the Austrian Bundesliga twice and the Austrian Cup once.
He led Al-Ahli to consecutive Asian Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026. His appointment would be a gamble for Newcastle but Jaissle's record shows promise and he is no stranger to silverware.
09:30 - Bettors back Newcastle for relegation after shock Howe exit
Newcastle United were backed into 12/113.00 from a high of 33/134.00 for relegation on the Betfair Sportsbook after Eddie Howe's shock departure from the Premier League club.
You can check out the latest odds here in a fast moving market but all the momentum is with Newcastle who, at the time of writing on Thursday morning, have received eight per cent of bets since the betting opened.
Even more astonishing, in the last hour 100 per cent of Premier League relegation bets have been on Newcastle.
Howe's exit is a shock, coming just over three weeks before Newcastle host Liverpool on matchday one of the new season.
It wouldn't have been a huge surprise at the end of last season, after the Magpies finished a disappointing 12th, but all the indications were that Howe would be in charge in 2026/27.
What next for Eddie Howe? England role the favourite
Betfair have opened a market on his next job and England are 3/14.00 favourites.
He could be in demand after reviving Newcastle's fortunes, albeit with the help of the funds made available by the club's Saudi Arabian owners.
Howe took Newcastle from relegation battles to the Champions League and also won the club's first silverware for over half-a-century when they triumphed in the Carabao Cup in 2025.
His final match in charge was a 4-1 defeat by Bristol City in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.
A summer of exits from St James' Park may have been a contributing factor in Howe's departure.
Midfielder Sandro Tonali was sold to Tottenham while Newcastle let Anthony Gordon go to Barcelona before the forward's impressive World Cup with England.
Will Bruno join Eddie in leaving Newcastle?
Bruno Guimaraes, meanwhile, has been linked with a move to Arsenal. Betfair ambassador Alan Shearer discussed Newcastle's transfer policy in his recent column for this site.
We'll have more news as we get it with the latest Betfair prices on who will succeed Howe as Newcastle manager.
