Leeds v Ipswich: Take Tractor Boys to avoid defeat

Ipswich have only suffered two defeats all season

Leeds entertain Ipswich in a fascinating pre-Christmas fixture from the Championship on Saturday. Betfair writer Mark O'Haire is backing the visitors to avoid defeat at Elland Road...

Leeds 1.865/6 boss Daniel Farke ordered his players to sit with their pain and disappointment for a couple of days after enduring a frustrating 1-1 home draw with Coventry last Saturday. The Whites were especially wasteful, spurning a number of golden opportunities to clinch top honours as they stayed 10 points adrift of the automatic promotion places.

Farke went with an unchanged XI at Elland Road, and despite dominating for the most part (winning the shot count 20-7 and Expected Goals (xG) count 2.25 to 0.52), Leeds were unable to pick up maximum points. And post-match, the Whites chief was in no mood for positives regarding his team's performance.

Farke said, "I'm disappointed and frustrated. Coventry put everyone who could defend on their team sheet. Sometimes you have to be relentless to open them up and we did that with a fantastic goal and then we missed chances. We had enough chances to win two or three games. After such a game you should come away with four, five or perhaps six goals."

Leeds are hoping to have Junior Firpo back in the squad for Saturday's showdown after the left-back returned to training following hamstring issues. However, Sam Byram, Jamie Shackleton and Stuart Dallas are among those still out of contention.

Ipswich 3.953/1 manager Kieran McKenna felt his team 'controlled almost every situation' in last Sunday's topsy-turvy 2-2 draw with Old Farm rivals Norwich at Portman Road. Nathan Broadhead (twice) and Wes Burns both spurned golden chances for Town in the first half, before Broadhead finally broke the deadlock in the 34th minute.

Norwich bounced back, bagging two scruffy goals either side of the break to turn the game on its head, before Wes Burns' low finish evened things up. Despite their best intentions, the Tractor Boys were unable to find a winning goal to end their 14-year wait for an East Anglian derby victory, although McKenna was pleased with his side's efforts.

He said, "I thought it was a really good performance. I thought we were the better team by a considerable margin. I thought we created lots and lots of chances, gave away very few chances and there were lots of things we can build on from the performance. I know on another day, if we play that game 10 times over, we win it a lot of times..."

Town capable of upsetting Elland Road odds

Leeds' seven-match Elland Road winning streak in the Championship was ended last weekend but the Whites are odds-on favourites to get back on track in Saturday's eye-catching clash between the two promotion contenders. Daniel Farke's hosts are rated as the top home team in the division, leading the league in home Expected Points (xP) and xG.

However, Ipswich are bound to test Leeds' credentials. The visitors have suffered only two league defeats since promotion, returning a remarkable (W16-D4-L2) across their opening 21 tussles. One of those defeats arrived in the reverse clash at Portman Road, although Town were rightly aggrieved with that loss having largely dominated that August encounter.

No Championship side has scored in more second-tier matches than Ipswich - the Tractor Boys firing a solitary blank thus far - and the away side also arrive in West Yorkshire boasting the best defence on their travels (shipping just nine times in 11 road trips). With that in-mind, I'm happy to keep Kieran McKenna's crew onside here.

Ipswich Double Chance pays 10/111.91 and holds plenty of appeal. It's a wager that's won in all bar one of Town's contests with top-half teams, whilst the Tractor Boys have recently returned from trips to Watford and Middlesbrough with well-earned victories. Meanwhile, Leeds have failed to pick up top honours in half of their meetings with top-12 opponents.
