Diego Forlan tries to console an inconsolable Zolten Gera
"Tiredness and weariness set in during extra-time and for much of the 30 minutes it looked like penalties would be needed to find a winner but up popped Uruguay star Diego Forlan again in the dying seconds to net the winner."
Heartbreak for Fulham as they fall at the final hurdle...
24 years later Diego broke English hearts once again as Atletico Madrid beat Fulham after extra-time to win the inaugural edition of the Europa League. Diego Forlan scored half-way through the first half after being matched at odds of [6.4] to open the scoring and his team traded at just [1.31] to win in 90 minutes but the Cottagers hit back through Simon Davies just before the break. Despite there being a few chances in the second-half, that's how it stayed with those who backed the draw in-running at [5.7] and the 1-1 scoreline at [9.2] pretty satisfied with the absence of any further goals.
Tiredness and weariness set in during extra-time and for much of the 30 minutes it looked like penalties would be needed to find a winner but up popped Uruguay star Diego Forlan again in the dying seconds to net the winner. Atletico were matched at [8.0] in-running in the extra-time match odds market and at odds of [14.5] to win after extra-time before kick-off in the "method of victory" market.
Fulham fans can be proud of their achievements during what was an extremely long and emotional campaign in this competition but Atletico, who always looked like they had an extra gear in them if necessary, were probably deserved winners in the end. The Spanish side were matched at a high of [80.0] to win the competition.
