My old man was a big Benfica fan and I grew up in sunny Portugal watching the great Rui Costa spray passes around the pitch for us and just running the show. I was there as the “maestro” scored on his 22nd birthday against Parma in the semi-finals of the Cup Winner’s Cup in front of 120,000 fans at the Estadio Da Luz. Quite why I support Everton over here is less clear, it was too long ago to remember, but once you pick your team that’s it and the boys in blue have given me the odd moment of happiness and I’d pick Big Dunc as my favourite Everton player of recent times for his fearless and passionate approach to the game.

My first-ever sports bet was a tenner on a 8-way acca at the 1998 World Cup which came in at 12-1. That made me think betting was easy; I was wrong. There is no single golden rule to being successful in betting and it’s not for everyone but the most important thing to remember is that betting is a long-term thing. It’s a bit like batting in cricket. No single innings is going to make or break you as a batsman just like no single bet will (or at least should) make or break you as a punter. But as a batsman, if you carry on making the right decisions and keep your discipline you’ll end up with a healthy average by the time you hang up your bat and the same applies to betting. And life, for that matter.
