The 2012 US Open didn't quite get off to the start that I had expected, with both of my wagers suffering bad losses on Monday in New York.

I'm also disappointed that I changed my mind on Jack Sock, but at least Andy Murray fans enjoyed the Scot beating Alex Bogomolov Jr by over the 9.5 game handicap mark.

On the women's side today at Flushing Meadows it might pay to take a chance on Sloane Stephens, who should prove too good for an on the slide Francesca Schiavone at odds of around 1.684/6.

Stephens has been putting together some very decent results of late and is now ranked just 20 places below Schiavone who has also struggled will ill health lately.

That aside, the Italian hasn't managed to string two consecutive wins together at a hard court tournament since Brisbane at the start of the year and recent defeats on the surface to Ksenia Pervak and Camila Giorgi indicate her current vulnerability.

Her American opponent meanwhile beat Giorgi easily in Cincy and she's also reached the Washington semi-finals and taken sets off Marion Bartoli and Agnieszka Radwanska in the last few weeks.

The men's matches today don't appear to offer great value and it's probably a day for multiples. The only outsiders that look worthy of consideration are David Goffin against Tomas Berdych and I wouldn't be shocked if Sergiy Stakhovsky made Stan Wawrinka struggle.

So my multiple on the men's draw today is Bernard Tomic to beat Carlos Berlocq, Julien Benneteau to beat Oliver Rochus and Sam Querrey to beat Yen Hsun Lu, which will pay around 1.9420/21.

Rochus has lost in the first round on four of his last five visits to New York and although Benny cost me dear when losing from a set and a break up against Lukasz Kubot in Winston-Salem last week he surely will be able to put that right against the diminutive Belgian today.

Tomic has a pretty comfortable-looking opener against clay courter Carlos Berlocq, who has won just two matches in Grand Slams played on hard courts his whole career.

His grinding game isn't suited to the quick New York courts and Tomic will have to have a shocker to lose to the man who beat him at Roland Garros last year in today's conditions.

Querrey has played Lu twice and won fairly comfortably both times and it would be a big surprise if he didn't come through today in three or perhaps four sets.
