  • Libberty can spring a Shloer surprise

Cheltenham, 13.10 - Back Lord Of All Saints each-way @ 14/115.00

It goes without saying that conditions are likely to deteriorate markedly at Prestbury Park before, and during, the opening day of the November Meeting with some forecasts suggesting the track may see in the region of 40ml of rain.

Let us hope that is the worst case scenario as the volume of rainfall allied with strong winds is going to make for a rather unedifying spectacle.

I will be treading a little carefully myself, but one horse that does interest me in the opener is Lord Of All Saints who would relish deep ground and might be worth chancing on his seasonal reappearance.

Trained by Harriet Dickin, the unexposed hurdler was a revelation when he returned to action 12 months ago with the decision to fit him with a hood as well as a tongue tie an inspired move.

The selection needed his first run back over an inadequate two miles at Chepstow, but was far from disgraced, as he was spotted staying on to finish within four lengths of the winner Loverdose who went on to win two of his next three starts.

Lord Of All Saints then displayed the benefit of that outing by reeling off a hat-trick at Leicester, Warwick and Sandown, coping superbly with very soft ground to climb the ranks to a rating of 115 from his intial mark of 85.

His final outing at Ayr was less inspiring, but he was too keen that day - sometimes an indication that a horse is over the top - and can be forgiven a blip on what was otherwise a breakthrough season.

He returns to action in this fiercely competitive handicap and one of the main positives for his chance is his relationship with Bradley Harris who was on board for all three wins last term and can ride again here.

The son of Jeu St Eloi is a real grinder and, providing he is straight enough to do himself justice following a sizeable absence, he could go well at a price.

Cheltenham, 14.55 - Back Libberty Hunter @ 9/25.50

This year's Shloer Chase is a fascinating renewal with the hat-trick seeing Jonbon returning to action following a wind operation.

The reigning champion boasts an unbeaten record of 6-6 when he returns to the track following a 10-week break or more and has been beaten just once with Nico de Boinville on, and I'm sure we all remember that Champion Chase reverse from March when he clouted the ninth and, in the circumstances, produced a mini miracle to finish let alone take second.

However, he has been very easy to back in the lead upto this race with all of the market support concerning last year's Arkle Chase fourth L'Eau du Sud who has been punted to the virtual exclusion of any of his rivals.

While I can see the case for Dan Skelton's seven-year-old, his chance isn't perhaps as obvious to me as it is many other judges who seem prepared to forgive him a tame effort in the Arkle when he curled up on the run-in, while the 135-rated Brookie ran past him at Aintree in another Grade 1 event.

His last three finishing speed percentages have all been sub-standard, including when he scrambled home at Warwick in beating Rubaud by a length on ground which should have suited him a lot more than his rival.

He may well win as Skelton is a master of producing his type cherry ripe from a layoff, but Libberty Hunter is a significantly bigger price at the time of writing, will adore deep ground, boasts an excellent record fresh and possesses winning form at Cheltenham.

The selecton, who has won following 245 and 374-day breaks, has track form figures of 121F with the fall sustained in last season's Champion Chase when he was far from done when coming down at the third last fence.

Harry Cobden's presence today is another plus and if the nine-year-old is ever going to beat Jonbon and L'Eau du Sud then it could be here.
