Scotsman impressive last time and can run well again
Back Royal Scotsman @ 10.09/1 in the 15:05 at Royal Ascot in the Coventry Stakes
Trainer Paul Cole, who is assisted by Olly these days but wouldn't have too many Group-class horses now, won the Coventry Stakes three times in the 1990s - with his last one in being Red Sea in 1998. Hopefully he can get back in the big time.
Royal Scotsman was a positive in the betting last night from 12/1 into 9/1, so others aren't too perturbed by the possibility of quick ground.
He handled the rain-softened conditions with ease last time out to bomb to a 5L victory at Goodwood, and earning a big time figure in the process and travelled very strongly.
However, his most interesting performance was the debut at Ascot in a very hot looking novice. The winner was a quicksilver Godolphin horse called Noble Style - who ran like lightning and has a Group 1 entry in the Phoenix. The second, third and fourth have all won, with Royal Scotsman and Walbank winning by 5L and 7L respectively.
It was telling that Cole said afterwards they were disappointed he didn't see out that debut run, but he has sharpened up mentally according to the trainer since and he looks well up to Pattern Class. His first four furlongs weren't too far away from Noble Style's sectionals on debut, and drawn in one today, at least he's got an extreme draw. I'm of the school where I don't mind very high or very low.
Unless of course there's a watering track bias!
Moonei's big day to star will finally come
Back Mooneista @ 12.011/1 in the 15:40 at Royal Ascot in the King's Stand Stakes
The market very much told the story for yesterday's selections. Zaccarela hit the frame at least and was well-backed, but I didn't quite expect All Those Years to go to around 20.019/1 on the Exchange as they jumped; so it was game over there.
And talking of markets, Mooneista is the mover for the King's Stand as Tony Calvin tipped her up yesterday at a big price, and it's good to have another fan of the mare, as I've been with her all season and she can run a big race on Tuesday. This is her fourth appearance in the column and she'll have a season ticket the way things are going!
I like her reappearance in the Listed Cork Stakes at the start of the season when she was drawn on the wrong side of the track but was only just touched off in second but travelled like the best horse in the race by far. She traded at 1.330/100 in the run and was 10/1 and weak in the market beforehand, so the run might have been needed.
Since then she hasn't won with a third at Naas and another second last time at the Curragh in the Greenlands Stakes. I had her in the column that day, so was hoping the stewards were going to reverse the decision as she was carried across the track by Brad The Brief. Alas, she didn't get it, but I concur with the Racing Post who described her as running the race of her life.
Dropping back down to 5f looks a good move, as she stays 6f well but has so much pace and speed with the way she travels, she'll get the tow into the race as Golden Pal will probably be running a 9.0 second sectional if you listen to Wesley Ward! That one is drawn in 13 - right next to Mooneista, and that looks perfect.
The selection ran a blinder over the far side (the wrong side) in the Commonwealth Cup last season, and she could crack a Group 1 this term. Hopefully she can, and good luck to her trainer Jack Davison.
We also have this as an Extra Place Special race on the Sportsbook. And if you are backing on the Exchange in the win market, she should easily trade at half of her price in-running if you are looking to lay off or get your whole stake back.
