Saturday horse racing tips and insight

13:15 Warwick - Katie Midwinter: Cha Cha to dance her way to victory

Six-year-old mare Hollygrove Cha Cha makes the most appeal at the prices ahead of warm favourite Jubilee Alpha in this Listed contest. Back over hurdles having been chasing this term, the daughter of Affinsea officially has 10lb to find with the mare ahead of her in the market, but a rating of 129 may not be a true reflection on her level of ability considering some of the form she has shown.

This term, Hollygrove Cha Cha has danced her way to victory over talented rival Bluey in testing conditions at Exeter, following an eye-catching third to formidable opponents Resplendent Grey and Handstands in a Listed Carlisle event on chasing debut.

The Jamie Snowden-trained mare won a Grade Two over hurdles twelve months ago, beating subsequent Grade One runner-up That'll Do Moss, now rated 136, on the back of a defeat to Jubilee Alpha. She needs to reverse form but has an extra year of experience in her favour over this longer trip in softer ground conditions, which puts her in with a solid chance.

There should be more to come from Hollygrove Cha Cha who has amassed plenty of valuable experience during her career so far, particularly against rivals rated 153 and 155. She represents an in-form yard under Gavin Sheehan, and should be tough to beat.

13:35 Newbury - Mark Milligan: Don't be shocked if Gosh runs well

It's Super Saturday at Newbury and there should be plenty of Cheltenham clues on offer with the likes of Lulamba, Haiti Couleurs and L'Homme Presse lining up in various races, while there are some exciting novice hurdlers on show too.

It's the handicaps that mainly interest me, though, and I'm kicking off with an each-way bet on Goshhowposh, who has a long absence to overcome but has been given a chance by the handicapper.

Not seen since failing to take to fences on his sole chase outing back in October 2024, the son of Malinas was twice a winner over hurdles in 2023 and reverts back to the smaller obstacles off the same mark as when he was last successful.

Plenty has to be taken on trust fitness-wise, but there can be little doubt that Goshhowposh is back on a fair mark and it's encouraging that he has won when fresh previously, that coming at Exeter where he was returning from a 297-day break.

The Skelton team continue to bang in the winners and it won't be a surprise to many that I rate A Pai De Nom the biggest danger, though there's little mileage in his current price.

14:10 Newbury - Timeform Verdict: L'homme can Presse home advantage

L'homme Presse is good in these small-field scenarios and, at the likely odds, might be worth siding with to see off Haiti Couleurs, who has achieved his best so far in the hurly burly of top-end handicaps.

14:25 Warwick - Mark Milligan: Lightly-raced chaser can go well in veterans' race

Veterans' chases are some of my favourite betting mediums over jumps as we know plenty about the competitors and there are usually a few on the downgrade that can readily be ruled out.

That probably isn't the case here as most of the seven-strong field can be given some sort of chance but none appeals more than Knappers Hill, who makes his first start in one of these contests.

Paul Nicholls has his team in fine form at the moment, hitting at a 37% strike-rate in the last fortnight, and there was absolutely nothing wrong with Knappers Hill's comeback run when beaten only eight lengths by subsequent King George winner The Jukebox Man at Haydock in November.

The Grade 2-winning chaser had been off over two years prior to that return so could reasonably have been expected to step forward next time.

However, but seemed to fail for stamina upped to 3m for the first time in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby and will benefit from a return to 2m 4f here.

Despite being an 10-year-old, Knappers Hill is low mileage is chasing terms and I'm confident that he'll give us a good run for our money.

Paul Nicholls on Knappers Hill

The idea is to qualify him for the veterans' series final which is at Haydock on 4 April. You have to be in the first eight to qualify - there is only seven runners here, so with a clear round hopefully he will qualify and that will be his target.

It is probably not ideal ground for him at Warwick on Saturday, but if we don't run and don't qualify, we are not going to be in the final. He is capable of running really well. I'm not sure 12 stone on heavy ground is his bag but we will see, he is a class horse. If he reproduces his Haydock form, he will win.

14:45 Newbury - Timeform Verdict: Hat-trick on the cards for star novice

Lulamba looked potentially top class when easily winning the Henry VIII Novices' Chase at Sandown on only his second chase start nine weeks ago and is fancied to complete the hat-trick up against more experienced rivals. Saint Segal and Calico both arrive at the top of their game and can give the selection most to think about.

15:00 Warwick - Katie Midwinter: Dreaming of a win with Shadow

Course-and-distance winner Dream Shadow has plenty to find on ratings in this Grade Two contest, but has only made three starts over hurdles to date, shaping well, winning twice, beaten only by a now 133-rated mare in La Conquiere who has been narrowly denied twice at this level.  She has won both of her latest two runs by a combined distance of 12-lengths, including beating subsequent winners Twistthenightaway and now 123-rated Betty's Daisy at this venue.

Trained by Fergal O'Brien, the point winner beat her stablemate Strong Run to land a first success under Rules in a Uttoxeter bumper, before placing third to now 125-rated Kingston Queen, current favourite for this race, at Market Rasen, in a race previously won by Dysart Enos, and, earlier, by Panic Attack in 2020. She also placed second to Charisma Cat in a Listed Sandown bumper previously won by Luccia, again shaping with promise.

The step up in trip seems to have brought further improvement from her, and, with proven course form, she should be able to hold her own, representing value at odds of [.....] under Johnny Burke.

15:20 Newbury - Sam Turner: No fussing over Dascombe's Hot runner

With at least four confirmed front-runners in the field, this race has the potential to be run at a true end-to-end gallop.

Bucephalus won't die wondering under regular rider Harriet Tucker, while the likes of Tutti Quanti, Wellington Arch and Un Sens A La Vie all like to race handily and dominate.

This event has favoured the front runners before so it wouldn't be a huge surprise if the speed held up and one of the quartet were good enough to hold on, but if Hot Fuss is allowed to gain a tow into the race like he was in a valuable Windsor handicap then he could be poised to run another huge race.

Last year's Fred Winter fourth was ridden ultra aggressively on his penultimate start at Sandown and paid for those exertions late on by fading into fourth courtesy of a tired effort at the last hurdle.

Ridden with a touch more restraint at the Thameside venue, Tom Dascombe's five-year-old appeared to benefit from the patience and wasn't burnt out when asked to challenge three hurdles from home.

From that point, he galloped on remorselessly to see off Wilful, himself a handsome winner of a valuable pre-Christmas handicap when well fancied.

That form looks strong and Hot Fuss, a tough and genuine stayer from the flat, could supplement that Windsor success here under a 5lb penalty.
