Saturday Horse Racing Tips and Insight

13:50 Goodwood - Sam Turner: Back Aeronautic EW @ 11/26.50

Joseph O'Brien's exuberant five-year-old Aeronautic travelled better than Judith Chalmers in last season's renewal, but arguably hit the front too soon and was worn down late on. He was forced to settle for a podium finish that day and that is his career in a nutshell at present, as he struggles to add to his two career victories.

The selection again moved like the best horse at Royal Ascot in the Copper Horse Handicap last time, but was locked up on the rail under John Velasquez who, despite barging his way out of a pocket, then ran down some cul-de-sacs in the Ascot straight.

The brilliant Dylan Brown McMonagle takes over in the saddle today and, at odds of 7/18.00, Aeronautic looks a very fair each-way play.

14:25 Goodwood - Katie Midwinter: Back Midak @ 33/134.00

In four starts for his current stable, the four-year-old has failed to pose a serious threat but has caught the eye in defeat, particularly when travelling best of all into the closing stages at this venue in his penultimate start. He raced keenly in a performance worth putting a line through at Newbury, and the return to this distance at this track should suit.

A significant step up on his recent form is required back at Group Three level, but he could prove better than his current rating of 102 reflects and may improve on his previous efforts this season by putting in a creditable performance.

15:00 Goodwood - Mark Milligan: Back Amelia Earhart @ 8/19.00

Being by Camelot and a full sister to strong stayer Cleveland, it would be no surprise whatsoever if this 1m 6f trip plays very much to Amelia Earhart's strengths, and it's worth bearing in mind she was sent off a relatively short price to win the Oaks on the back of that impressive Chester success in the spring.

There's still plenty of time for Amelia Earhart to get her career back on track and the Ballydoyle team appear to have turned the corner this week in terms of stable form.

15:35 Goodwood - Alan Dudman: Back Soldier's Tree EW @ 10/111.00

Completely Random, Soldier's Tree, Far Above Dream and Mitbaahy were second, third, fourth and fifth respectively in the Wokingham. My preference from that race is for Soldier's Tree who, at 10/111.00, still looks a good each-way punt.

He's often keen in his races but he chased Hammer The Hammer at Royal Ascot down the centre of the track and that seemed to help a lot, as last time in a Group 3 in a small field he overraced yet again. Soldier's Tree was conceding weight to Completely Random and Far Above Dream and has to again here from 108, so he'll need to produce a Hoof It like performance.

16:10 Goodwood - Timeform: Back We're Goosers @ 11/43.75

We're Goosers looks the part in the flesh - good-topped gelding - and he built on his promising return to action when routing his field at Newmarket in May.

It isn't often you seen handicaps over seven furlongs won by nine-and-a-half lengths, but he drew clear of his opposition in the style of one who is ready for a much higher grade.

He received an 11lb hike in the weights for that success and was very strong in the market in the minutes before the Britannia at Royal Ascot went off, but for whatever reason he failed to fire.

That run was clearly too bad to be true, heavily eased off as if something was amiss, and he's well worth another chance to prove this mark is still a lenient one - he's at least 4lb clear of his rivals on Timeform weight-adjusted ratings in this field.

We're Goosers has subsequently been gelded and he remains a smart prospect.
