Saturday Horse Racing Tips: Katie Midwinter's best bets including 33/1 Goodwood Festival fancy

Newmarket, 13:33 - Back Sunshine Star E/W @ 11/112.00

In the Listed opener on the July Course, Sunshine Star could outrun her odds for John and Thady Gosden under Rab Havlin. She's lightly raced, making only her fifth career start, and, although she must show improvement as she steps up to this level, there could be plenty of further progression to come from her.

The daughter of Sea The Stars is out of Dansili mare Dream Peace, a Group Two winner who placed on multiple occasions at the top level and has already produced a number of black-type achievers, including Oaks winner Soul Sister.

The three-year-old filly is in receipt of the weight-for-age allowance and could outrun her odds in her first appearance in Stakes company.

Goodwood, 13:50 - Back Sing Us A Song E/W @ 11/26.50

Ralph Beckett-trained Sing Us A Song is yet to get off the mark for the season this year but has run consistently well in three starts to date, including when a luckless fifth in the Copper Horse Stakes at Royal Ascot when last seen.

From an unchanged mark of 97, the son of Camelot should give a good account of himself under James Doyle, with proven form over the trip. He's still unexposed in handicaps over this distance, currently 6lb higher than when beating subsequent winner Klassleader, at Haydock last year, and could improve beyond his current rating.

It could be worth keeping the faith in Sing Us A Song and he holds solid claims in this field.

Newmarket, 14:13 - Back Holi Scarlett E/W @ [SP]

Despite facing a stiff task on official ratings, Holi Scarlett could put in a creditable effort under 7lb claiming Olivia Haines, having shown to possess some ability this season. She was able to get off the mark at the fourth time of asking when beating Past Passion at Nottingham a few weeks ago, before finishing a staying on third over 5f at Yarmouth in her subsequent starts. 

Whilst plenty of further improvement is required, the daughter of Bungle Inthejungle has gained some valuable experience during her debut campaign which could hold her in good stead. She was unable to make an impression in a hot race at Newbury when last seen, but could fare better back in handicap company and shouldn't be discounted for Stuart Williams.

Goodwood, 14:25 - Back Midak E/W @ 33/134.00

Outsider of the field Midak has plenty to find on ratings with the main protagonists, but could outrun his odds under Kieran Shoemark having shown class previously. He was sent off at odds of 9/110.00 for the Derby when trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, but couldn't land a blow in the Classic won by Lambourn last year.

Three from three prior to his Epsom visit, the son of Footstepsinthesand had landed Group Three honours at Saint-Cloud, shaping with great promise. He was gelded prior to finishing fourth in a Listed Chantilly race, before changing hands for €300,000, now residing with Ian Williams.

In four starts for his current stable, the four-year-old has failed to pose a serious threat but has caught the eye in defeat, particularly when travelling best of all into the closing stages at this venue in his penultimate start. He raced keenly in a performance worth putting a line through at Newbury, and the return to this distance at this track should suit.

A significant step up on his recent form is required back at Group Three level, but he could prove better than his current rating of 102 reflects and may improve on his previous efforts this season by putting in a creditable performance.

Goodwood, 15:00 - Back Amelia Earhart E/W @ 8/19.00

Three-year-old filly Amelia Earhart was sent off as the 7/42.75 favourite for the Oaks at Epsom following an impressive Cheshire Oaks win, but could only manage sixth, well beaten by dominant winner Thundering On. She couldn't make much of an impression in the Irish Oaks either, but was staying on in first-time cheekpieces, therefore a step up to a mile-and-three-quarters could allow her to show the best of her ability.

By Camelot, Amelia Earhart is nicely bred out of a dual Group Three-winning mile-and-a-half performer in Venus De Milo, who once placed in the Irish Oaks to Chicquita as well as being tried over an extended 1m6f. She's a sister to Chester Cup winner Cleveland and is related to a number of other black-type achievers.

Her pedigree would suggest a step up in trip is well within her capabilities, and, having clearly been thought of in high regard prior to his latest couple of defeats, Amelia Earhart could be worth keeping onside for a genius trainer in Aidan O'Brien.

Stewards' Cup, Goodwood, 15:35 - Back Toca Madera E/W @ 22/123.00

Toca Madera put in a good effort in defeat when fourth to Twilight Calls here on Tuesday. From a 1lb higher mark, the five-year-old could be worth keeping onside, as he remains on a workable rating, particularly considering some of his best form.

Last season for Brian Meehan, the son of Bated Breath put in a number of noteworthy performances, especially when third to American Affair at York. He has proven this term that he still retains plenty of ability for current trainer David O'Meara, including when winning at Doncaster, and could pose a threat under Saffie Osborne.

Stewards' Cup, Goodwood, 15:35 - Back King Of Light E/W @ 33/134.00

Despite being 6lb higher than his last winning mark, King Of Light is one to note under Marco Ghiani at a big price. He could represent value at current odds if able to enjoy a favourable trip in the race, capable of outrunning his odds at his best.

Trained by Stuart Williams, the four-year-old gelding is a likeable performer with plenty of handicap experience in his favour. There could be more to come from him and he's one to note in a hugely competitive race.

Thirsk, 15:47 - Back Glenfinnan E/W @ [SP]

Effective over this 7f trip, Glenfinnan is only 1lb higher than when winning at Beverley in May. Since his latest success, he has put in a couple of competitive efforts, including when beaten only a length by Highland Olly when last seen, and he can make the frame once again under Connor Beasley if on a going day.

In the past, the likeable gelding has been able to win from a much higher mark of 93. He's well treated from his current rating at his best, with a trip to suit, and holds solid each-way claims for an in-form Michael Dods stable.

Thirsk, 15:47 - Back Enola Grey E/W @ [SP]

Enola Grey is another contender to consider at Thirsk, capable of outrunning her odds for Gemma Tutty.

The likeable six-year-old is currently 1lb lower than her last winning mark, putting her with a decent chance at the weights, and she has put in notable efforts already this year, including when a good fifth to Stateira at Newcastle and when beaten only a length-and-a-quarter by Ziggy's Queen at Lingfield.

The grey mare carries a low weight in this race and has been able to give a good account of herself in tough company in the past. She could do so again under William Pyle as she makes her 64th career start.

Goodwood, 16:45 - Back Rafe's Da Man E/W @ 14/115.00

Ghaiyyath colt Rafe's Da Man is more exposed than many in the field as is still yet to get off the mark in three starts, but has been gaining some valuable experience, learning on the job, and could put in a bold bid under Pat Dobbs.

He has shown greenness on occasion, but shaped with great promise when third at Newbury recently, when staying on well behind Fuel The Jet and Cilician, and could be capable of showing further improvement.

Having caught the eye previously, Rafe's Da Man is one to note for a prolific trainer of juveniles in Richard Hannon, who struck with who has already saddled four two-year-old winners this week, including two at this meeting.

Goodwood, 17:20 - Back Great Chieftain E/W @ 20/121.00

Course winner Great Chieftain makes each-way appeal in the finale of this year's Glorious Goodwood Festival. He's currently 4lb below his last winning mark following a couple of below par efforts, but was seen to good effect behind The Fingal Raven at Meydan during the winter and is on a mark from which he can be competitive if returning to his best.

With proven course form and plenty of valuable experience in his favour, this could be a good opportunity for the five-year-old gelding to return to form for Oliver Cole and David Probert. He needs to improve on his latest efforts but could fare better in familiar surroundings and could put in a solid effort.
