Horse racing tips for Monday's Racing - Three to back at Lingfield and Wolverhampton
Mark has three all-weather selections on Monday

Mark Milligan has taken a look at the final day of racing before the short pre-Christmas break and has three selections at Lingfield and Wolverhampton...

  • Newly-gelded Gosden runner to bounce back

  • Low-level handicapper looks set to strike

  • Fifty looks Nifty in the Wolverhampton closer

12:00 Lingfield - Back Port Of London @ 5/23.50

Monday sees the final day of UK racing before the short pre-Christmas break and, though the action is generally low key, there are a few good betting opportunities, particularly on the all-weather.

This 1m 2f handicap has an interesting look to it and I thought top weight Mr Baloo had a decent chance given he'd shaped better than the bare result when rather keen at Wolverhampton last time.

However, the one that makes the most appeal is John & Thady Gosden's unexposed Godolphin runner Port Of London.

The son of Night Of Thunder stepped up markedly on his debut effort when second at Southwell in September before going one better at Kempton next time, denying his stable companion Military Cross by a head.

Port Of London was sent off favourite with cheekpieces fitted on handicap debut back at Kempton last time but proved a disappointment as he faded into seventh, a run that suggests he may not have been 100% on the day.

The selection has been gelded and given a bit of a break since then, so I'm hoping he can get his fledgling career back on track here.

18:00 Wolverhampton - Back Bluebells Boy @ 15/82.88

Bluebells Boy has been threatening to come good since joining the Hayley Burton yard in October and he can gain reward for a string of consistent placed efforts in this 6f handicap.

A five-time winner when in the care of Daryl Holland last season, Bluebells Boy has had spells with Lemos De Souza and Robert Eddery since then, neither of whom got the best out of him. However, that means the handicapper has cut him some slack and he now finds himself on a mark of 60, with his last win coming just over a year ago from a mark of 68.

His most recent effort just a few days ago came when third to the revitalized Shalaa Asker at Chelmsford and Bluebells Boy is no stranger to being turned out again quickly. This isn't a deep race at all and Luke Morris should get a good tow into it from the speedy Coast as the selection looks to take advantage of what could prove a decent mark.

20:30 Wolverhampton - Back Fifty Nifty @ 4/15.00

An interesting class 4 handicap over 6f concludes the pre-Christmas racing and there are several in with a chance in what looks an open encounter. The old stager Aberama Gold still has plenty of life in even rising nine years old and he ran really well to finish second at Newcastle just over a week ago.

Archie Watson's Dyrholaey would have a shot at his best, but his most recent win came in a seller and it remains to be seen if he's as good as he was as a juvenile, while Accruel returned to form when second last time but he can be free going and doesn't always settle well enough to se things out.

That brings us to Fifty Nifty, who is a relatively new recruit to the Mick Appleby yard and hasn't been seen to anything like best effect on his last couple of starts. He's also completely unexposed as a sprinter and has plummeted down the weights on the back of a mid-season slump when trained by Tom Clover.

Rated 95 when contesting the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot in the summer, Fifty Nifty now has a mark of 80 to work with and could well be chucked in if he bounces back to anything like his best.

Best of luck if you're playing and it only remains for me to wish a very merry Christmas to all who've read and supported my columns throughout the year.

I'll be back to cover the Boxing Day action later in the week.
