Ned Tanner stayed on strongly up the straight at Kelso, and he did well to get to within a length and a quarter of the winner after conceding first run and meeting a bit of interference at the second-last. That he got so close to the winner, who benefitted from a well-judged front-running ride, suggests that he's on a handy mark he can defy when things develop more favourably.

That contest was over just shy of two and three-quarter miles, but both of Ned Tanner's wins last season were achieved over trips just shy of three miles, so the step back up in distance here is no bad thing, while the continued good form of the Nick Alexander yard is also in his favour.

Dunnet Head had been given a wind operation ahead of his reappearance and handicap debut at Carlisle last month and he showed improved form to justify favouritism.

He stayed on well to land that 17-furlong handicap, leaving the impression that the best is still to come from this impressive bumper winner after only three starts over hurdles, especially when faced with a stiffer test of stamina.

He ought to relish this step up in trip and, with the potential to carry on improving for a while yet, a 4 lb rise in the weights should not be enough to stop him following up.
