A bit has to be taken on trust with Hot Rod Lincoln in this extended 2m 5f handicap hurdle, but he could be well treated as he returns to the smaller obstacles following a pair of no-shows over fences.
Harry Fry's eight-year-old was a good third behind Twin Power in a novice handicap hurdle at Sandown in February of last year before he got off the mark himself in a maiden at Fontwell the following May.
The form of that contest has a solid look to it, with four of the beaten horses coming out to finish runner-up on their next starts.
Given he was a relatively late recruit to hurdling, it was no surprise that the Fry stable wanted to get Hot Rod Lincoln over fences as soon as possible after that. However, he just didn't take to them in his two outings, finishing pulled up both times in November and December of last year.
A little break and a bit of a freshening should have done him the power of good and a repeat of the pick of his hurdling form could see him go very close off a mark of just 106.
The current 8/19.00 seems a fair price.
Ben Coen has had a good time of things out in Dubai during the winter and he makes a rare foray to the UK for a good book of rides at Wolverhampton this evening, where I'm hoping he'll be on at least a couple of winners.
All of this evening's Dunstall Park races are rider restricted, meaning the only jockeys who can take mounts are those to have ridden fewer than 30 winners in the last year or so, but that doesn't apply to jockeys from other restrictions and the excellent Coen is taking advantage of that particular loophole.
He's aboard Michael Bell's Mammy in the 7f handicap at 19:00 and she looks a potential improver now getting to race in this sphere for the first time following three quiet runs in novice/maiden company.
Her best effort came in the middle of those three outings last season, where she finished fifth over 5f at Ripon, a race that threw up a pair of next-time-out winners.
Her final outing in 2023 came at Beverley in July, but that was seemingly a means to an end as she now gets to race in handicap company off what could be a lenient opening mark of just 65.
Bred to be at least useful, Mammy is a half-sister to a talented pair of 7f winners and the step up to that particular trip for the first time today should show her in an even better light.
