Bolger to boss over the banks again
Back Stealthy Tom @ 4/1 in the 14:35 at Punchestown
You know it's not quite your day when both of your selections finish second. You also know the racing gods hovering over Punchestown are against you too when both of your picks hit 1.031/33 and 1.11/10 in-running. That was the case on Friday for the column, and while Vaucelet was the bigger of the two - he really ought to have won.
On with Saturday in Punchestown and I am returning to the "Banks Boss" Enda Bolger with Stealthy Tom - I horse I had backed earlier in the week when finishing second in the La Touche Cup over 4m2f.
The ground was a bit quicker when he was just denied by Vital Island - a horse ironically out to run again after a couple of days after running earlier in the week.
That's the only slight doubt for me with the quick turnaround, but it happens all the time at the major festivals in Ireland such as Punchestown, Galway and to a lesser extent Listowel.
He didn't do an awful lot wrong, and there was a huge gap back to third in the race too.
Considering he was a shorter price two days ago, there's an argument to made this will suit him better over 3m1f than the extra mile and a furlong.
Good or yielding is ideal, and with Birchdale prominent in the betting, I'd be disappointed if he couldn't beat him.
He has the pace made for the drop back in distance and is a previous CD winner, plus he's drifted out to 4/1 this morning.
Elliott to seek solace in bumper
Back Rainbow Trail @ 9/2 in the 18:05 at Punchestown
There was a time when Gordon Elliott would be challenging Willie Mullins at Punchestown, but the champion trainer has been so far ahead this week, he's made Elliott look like any other trainer - and that's despite the patronage he receives from Gigginstown.
Indeed, the County Meath handler has had just one winner from 42 runners sent out this week, and all eight of Elliott's horses were well beaten yesterday, but I am hoping he can end on a high with a bumper winner at 18:05.
Rainbow Trail's sales price rose to £220,000 at the Cheltenham Sales in the winter, and he's by a sire in Davidoff who has produced some smart jumpers.
While Elliott seems to have dropped away in the Grade 1 sphere, his bumper horses have held the highest strike at 22% this term compared to his runners over hurdles and fences.
Willie has the favourite in this at Evens in Sorrentino, who is related to Mengli Khan, but his pedigree is in complete contrast to Rainbow Trail's, and while you should never doubt Mullins with his left-field thinking, this comes down to price and I'll take the 9/2 which can boost our double as both selections drifted this morning on the Sportsbook.
