Kempton tonight sees Charlie Appleby unleash a pair of newcomers that cost 5.8million between with El Cordobes in the 17:30 and Kalidasa in the following 18:00, but both are short prices unsurprisingly.
The money spent on those two would make Eugenie Grandet wince.
There's a better price on Appleby's Majestic Pride however in the feature Hyde Stakes, and a drift this morning from 9/43.25 to 11/43.75 hives him into the bet compartment.
He's a half-brother to Farhh, Racing History and Basem, and the hope here being a son of Shamardal is that the All-Weather might suit him best.
The sire has a 17% win record on All-Weather tracks, and it's just as solid over Kempton's mile with a win record of 17% and placed at 43%.
The 3yo was last seen in the Listed King Charles II Stakes at Newmarket in the spring, but the trip of 7f and especially good ground were factors that didn't illicit the best performance as Appleby had said previously he's a soft ground horse.
His only start on the All-Weather came with a win at Chelmsford as a 2yo, and while he has to find a bit on form, Listed races on the All-Weather at this time of year are nowhere near as strong as summer ones, and he is very much unexposed to earn his Listed stripes today.
This is his first start since being gelded too. It's a plus William Buick is on rather than James Doyle, who has been beaten on 10 short price favourites since the end of October.
An open-looking 2m Stayers Series Final at 20:00 with Vino Victrix at 5/16.00 the favourite in the morning (from 6s), and while it's been a year of struggle, he's down to a nice enough mark for tonight to be a factor.
Indeed, the rating of 95 appeared beyond him earlier in 2023 and having been in deep races such as the Chester Cup, he's in calmer waters this evening, with a reduced mark too.
He wasn't beaten far in one of the qualifiers for this final last time out at the track, and was unlucky with the way the race panned out as the pace was a searching one. It suited those that were held up, and Vino Victrix was punished for trying to go with the leader.
His 16th furlong was over a second slower than his 14th, so the evidence is conclusive that he went too hard as Sir Chauvelin received a perfect waiting ride in behind.
Billy Loughnane is an interesting booking for Hughie Morrison, and the horse is consistent on the All-Weather with one CD win and four seconds from his 10 starts.
