Young hurdlers that are unexposed, and certainly ones with more to come over the 3m make the Grade 2 River Don a more open race than the markets suggests in my opinion.
The favourite River Cartries really impressed at Ascot over shorter and this race was pencilled in for him by Paul Nicholls, but he isn't the only improver, and as usual, a Nicholls runners tends to take a fair bit of the market.
I like Esprit Du Potier, and the 5yo grey was equally impressive in winning at Ayr last time when upped to 2m5f in heavy ground, and he'll be one certainly that won't be inconvenienced by the step up further in distance.
He has a smooth way of going about his business as he travelled well on his previous start over 2m and hit 1.51/2 in-running that day.
That ability to travel might serve him well if there is a hint of good ground at Doncaster.
Famous Bridge is a horse I have tipped before in this column, and he's proving better than ever this season with a couple of wins and is primed for a tilt at the Great Yorkshire Handicap.
He is now up to 139, so the race demands more, but he's a tough horse that stays and jumps and as Richards likes to say "he's a grand hoss". I would be amazed if he couldn't win again of this mark.
His two wins at Haydock - including the Tommy Whittle both were in soft and heavy but he did win on decent ground last term at Wetherby when officially good, and I don't think he is one dimensional in terms of going.
The 8yo may be an Aintree horse down the line, but for now and the present season a victory here might persuade Richards to go for the Scottish version.
