A superb day of racing with some of the elite jumpers out on Saturday and the Haydock card has changed complexion with news of the ground easing this morning and the possibility of easing further.
With that in mind Punta Del Este very much fits the bill today as a horse with a ton of soft and heavy ground form and he should be spot on for a big run this afternoon following a pipe-opener at Carlisle last time out.
That was a good quality race in its right at Carlisle behind Castle Rushen and he was travelling very well in that before an untidy jump two out and then to add to the woes he was short of room. He did hit 3.814/5 in-running there.
Last season he was progressive with two wins and his Ascot success was over 2m6f with a strong performance.
The 8/19.00 looks pretty big with the ground in his favour and the drop in trip is not a bother as he won over CD last winter by a huge margin.
More rain please and expect him to be held up for a late run.
Catch Him Derry was one of my ante-post picks earlier this week as I was looking to take on Doyen Quest for the two Skelton runners, and the plan is half done as I suspected the ground would go against Doyen Quest - and it has as he's a non-runner.
It leaves us in a good position with Catch Him Derry; who will want it soft and he's off a nice low weight here.
He signed off last term with a win at Ayr over 3m and looked a well-handicapped horse on that occasion from 107, and he very much is a hurdler who wants cut in the ground.
A nice spin around Newton Abbot last time for his first run and win of the season was very comfortable in heavy conditions over a shorter trip and he's back to a more favourable 3m today.
Tristan Durrell is able to claim 3lb and he's another for Skelton that won't mind more rain. He is a fast improver and lightly-raced so it's no surprise he's been pretty strong on the Sportsbook into 7/24.50 following Doyen Quest's absence.
Durrell is 2-6 at 33% and a profit of +7.00 at Haydock too.
