Newcastle specialist out for win number seven
Monday's double at 10/111.00 continued the good run for the column with six single winners in five days and trainer Saeed bin Suroor - who helped us yesterday, can do so again with one of the most fascinating contenders on the whole day in Military March.
The Godolphin largesse has been bathed in gold of late with both Charlie Appleby and bin Suroor hitting their straps, and the latter is 3-6 in the last two weeks running at a 50% strik-rate.
Military March heads the betting at 3/14.00, with the lay-off of 999 days seemingly not affecting his chances, and bin Suroor is a handler who can get them ready after such lengthy absences.
He won the Group 3 Autumn Stakes at Newmarket as a juvenile and beat Al Suhail, Molatham and Rohan - all three-figure performers subsequently and looked a fine prospect for the following year. He had a real old battle with Al Suhail on the Rowley Mile then and the pair were miles ahead of the others.
Indeed, he was fourth on his sole outing in 2020 in the 2,000 Guineas behind Kameko, and at one stage was single figures in the betting for the Derby.
Since then he has been seen just once out in Meydan and he's been gelded, but a switch to a handicap from 107 makes this the most interesting race of the evening off top weight.
He's a real physically imposing type and is easy to spot with his big white blaze, and he has a couple of AW winners in his pedigree to offer hope he'll be fine on the Newcastle surface.
Indeed, his sire New Approach is 11% win and 32% placed at Newcastle with his runners, but not many of those would have been so impeccably bred.
A similar sort of price for the second selection in the closing 6f Handicap at 20:30, and a world away in terms of class compared to Military March for this 0-52, but Blackcurrent's Newcastle record is so good, he can have the edge in what looks a weak affair.
It must be noted there has been a big mover in the betting on the Sportsbook for this race, with Sydney Bay for Geoff Harker backed from 20/121.00 into 8/19.00, and while off a good mark, had been previously thrashed in two runs for Ann Duffield.
Blackcurrent has a record of eight wins, eight seconds and eight thirds on the All-Weather from 47 starts being a hardy front-runner and a no nonsense ride.
Last time out he finished second at the track over 5f, but 6f suits him better these days and the extra furlong should help him chisel out a seventh win at Newcastle.
The 7yo rarely runs a bad race and has a decent enough draw in eight for this.
