Hexham start their new season on Wednesday

Hexham's new season starts on Wednesday and Alan Dudman is heading to the north east in search of a winning 17/118.00 double on the Sportsbook...

  • Opening selection will enjoy the good ground

  • Smith hurdler down in distance a plus

  • Two selections on Wednesday at 6/42.50 and 6/17.00

Hexham - 17:14: Back My Gift To You

Seconditis struck again with Grand Providence - who finished runner-up at Goodwood hitting a price of 2.546/4 in-running, although she wasn't the most dramatic second of the afternoon, with Doom becoming the shortest price loser since 1948 - beaten at 1/25.

Nothing that short for the return of glorious Hexham on Wednesday, and the track in the north east has often been one of my favourite punting tracks due to the fairness of the course, and while the 6/42.50 looks tight for My Gift To You in the 17:14, there's an argument to say this in-form horse should be shorter due to the opposition.

John McConnell sends Battle Of Benburb over, and he's the second favourite at 6/17.00, yet could be double that as he has struggled badly of late, and he's the price he is due to McConnell, as he is always to be feared sending his runners here.

My Gift To You has landed a couple of 0-100s this summer at Worcester and Southwell in ready fashion - having a lot in hand in both and the good ground clearly suits him.

He acquitted himself well at Cartmel last time with a 10lb rise where he finished second to Secret Secret. The winner made his move earlier, and that proved decisive as My Gift To You got caught out.

However, the ground was also on the softer side and the turf looked loose on top watching the replay, and a sounder surface with him going up in trip today will suit as he looked a real stayer last time.

The 5yo still looks well treated as he was previously trained by Paul Webber before his switch to current handler James Owen, and as Webber barely had a winner last year, he should improve again.

Hexham - 17:45: Back Copper Beach

Trainer Sue Smith would often be the "go to" one for a winner at Hexham in the past, but last year was less than fruitful and over the last five seasons at Hexham, she has had only 12 winners at 11%.

However, her Copper Beach has raced over 3m, and one aspect for a selection I like around here is a horse with stamina, and dropping down to 2m4f is the key angle here.

He finished third at Market Rasen last time out, but the track was on the sharp side for him.

The hurdler bolted up at Uttoxeter earlier this summer over 2m4f and seemed to find the summer ground and a decent surface to his liking with a runaway win by 13L.

Copper Beach finished second in a Hexham bumper in 2022 in soft conditions, looking very much like a stayer on that occasion and I think he'll enjoy the track today.

Back Copper Brach @ 6/17.00
