Back Chantilly to finish top five in the 15:00 Newbury
One of the highlights of the winter was seeing Geoff Oldroyd with a couple of decent horses in the shape of Doctor Khan Junior and Pocklington. Indeed, they are half-brothers.
Pocklington lines up for a tilt at a nice prize on Saturday in the 14:25 Listed Carnarvon Stakes over 6f, and he's my idea of a bet at 10/111.00 on the Sportsbook, although he took quite a drift from his initial 6s on Friday.
As ever with these sorts of races, there isn't a ton of form to go on, but I was impressed with Pocklington's debut win.
He bettered that with a smooth effort against in the north east, and again over 6f with a tidy defeat to Army Ethos - the Coventry Stakes second and 2/91.22 favourite.
It's easy to say he badly underperformed there, but that also would be unfair to Pocklington, because Army Ethos had the rail and made the running yet was beaten fair and square as Pocklington lobbed along and clocked a 10.91 second penultimate furlong.
He also looked a much bigger physical presence than Army Ethos, and a nice stiff long straight like Newbury might suit him well.
The 3yo is also out of Oldroyd's Ladies Are Forever - who was very much 6f on quick ground.
A big afternoon for jockey Kieran Shoemark with Inspiral in the Lockinge Stakes and Goodwood Odyssey in the London Gold Cup - a strong handicap over 1m2f at 15:00.
The 7/18.00 on the Sportsbook was all but gone and snapped up on the Friday but he's still a bet at 5/16.00 after a fine Sandown win last time.
The ground was good to soft so he'll likely face quicker conditions, but I doubt it will be lightening fast. His trainer, the likeable David Menuisier said after his Salisbury soft ground win as a novice: "I don't think the soft ground was important to him, but he handled it well. He will tell tell us if he needs it though."
Stepping up to the 1m2f really suited the 3yo at Sandown, and he stayed well despite meeting trouble from the back when making his move and still landed the money in tidy fashion from 83. That's usually a fair handicap too at Sandown.
He might get further down the line but for now 1m2f looks his ideal distance and off 90, he should get a decent run here and I suspect they'll hold him up again.
Shoemark and Menuisier have a record of 13% and 22% win and placed together.
