Expect more from Coast for Hughes
Back Connemara Coast @ 9/1 in the 13:50 at Newmarket
Kodebreaker almost got there yesterday despite yet another selection drifting massively in betting for the column. Michael Herrington's runner went from 6/1 out to a BSP of 15.0 and was just denied in second.
I certainly won't be deterred from backing him again. Written Broadcast however was given a mountain to climb from a hopeless position.
Day Two of the Craven Meeting sets up another terrific afternoon, and hopefully we can get off to the best possible start with a 9/1 play on Connemara Coast for Richard Hughes in a decent 3yo Handicap.
The son of Sea The Moon created a good impression in two starts as a juvenile last season - running well on debut at Ascot before landing a victory at Wolverhampton. The form of the Ascot run is the standout, as Blanchard was just ahead of him, and he subsequently ran in a Group 3.
Connemara Coast started off his year after being gelded with another ran in Novice company at Lingfield, but it was a race where nothing went right.
He was too far off the pace and Jamie Spencer wasn't hard on the horse as he made a move over the far side, which in my opinion is never the best place to go.
The selection starts off handicapping from 81 today and can show a lot more than we saw last time. The opener is also an Extra Place Special on the Sportsbook.
Gosden holds a strong hand
Back Never Ending @ 14/1 in the 16:45 at Newmarket
One of the most interesting races on the card today is the Fillies' Maiden at 16:45, and a whole host of trainers represented by some real eyecatchers in terms of pedigree.
William Haggas has a daughter of Sea The Stars in Sea Claret that was a huge 14/1 this morning, and that's the same price for John Gosden's Never Ending, who has had a run and should build on that experience.
Gosden has dominated this race in the last ten years with four winners, and he's landed the last two.
Never Ending was far too green on her debut at Southwell in December to make a winning start, but the winner of the race produced a fast time and looks useful.
The selection cost 825,000 as a yearling, and we are backing the improvement from first to second start here in the hope of maybe getting a place too at the price.
Silver Lady at 11/10 is another Sea The Stars in the field making her first start for Charlie Appleby, but it does look the sort of race a big price might be able to hit the frame in behind if the favourite is as good as the market thinks.
Gosden is 20% win and 38% placed with his 3yos at Newmarket.
