Break the Kode and crack Southwell Handicap
Back Kodebreaker @ 13/2 in the 19:00 at Southwell
The Newmarket card for Tuesday looks terrific, but I fancy too many Godolphin horses so will hardly get a price, and that takes me to Southwell this evening and two of the Extra Place Special races appeal.
We can get 13/2 on Kodebreaker, and he's in good shape to hopefully trouble the judge in the 19:00.
Michael Herrington's handicapper rarely runs a bad race despite his lowly rating, and as he usually operates between 7f and 1m1f, he has his ideal distance this evening at 1m - and he's a previous CD winner.
He wasn't beaten too far over 7f at Southwell on his latest start, but he made a move inside the final 2f to the far side, where as the cluster of runners nearside were in a better position.
The 4yo travelled well into the straight, but the finishing speed of 97% showed they might have gone a touch too hard.
Previously he had scored over CD in March off 56 and looked to have a bit more in hand despite the 0-55 level. I like his draw in 10 tonight as it means he has scope to switch over to the rail - a must for me at Southwell.
He's consistent and represents a solid each-way bet at the price with the Extra Place too.
Broadcast deserves respect over 7f
Back Written Broadcast @ 9/2 in the 19:30 at Southwell
A similar profile for the second at Southwell at 19:30, as Written Broadcast is drawn in 12 and is another runner who likes the Southwell layout.
Ollie Pears' 6yo has been a model of consistency since January, and even in defeat hasn't been beaten far.
In fact, he's improved 8lb this winter, which takes some doing when you are rated 58.
He was in the same Kodebreaker race over 7f last time behind Elladora. The winner made the running, and Written Broadcast came from a lot further back off the pace and went down by half a length.
He stays 1m, and that's an angle I like to pursue at Southwell as you do need a horse to stay well.
Jockey Mark Winn is able to claim 5lb, and the apprentice rides around here well and has a strike-rate of 20% with a 3-15 record and a small profit.
From 14 AW starts, Written Broadcast has two wins, five seconds, and two thirds. He can miss the break, but it won't be a bad thing here as Winn will have time to get his position to unleash a run on the stands' side.
