Final Orders a big price for repeat success
We switch codes from the All-Weather last night and have a go at a couple of big prices with the Extra Place Specials on the Sportsbook for the start of the Dublin Racing Festival and 24 runners with soft ground leads me to the opening pick with Paul Nolan's Park Of Kings.
He ticks the box in terms of the ground as he won a couple of handicap hurdles earlier in the season at Roscommon and Punchestown - with the former in quite testing ground.
His trainer Paul Nolan put the tongue tie on and he improved from his previous efforts, but he had displayed some ability in bumpers and I liked the way he travelled in one of those races at Fairyhouse.
The big question mark here is the trip as he has raced at predominantly 2m (one try at 2m4f), but he looks as though he might stay a little further and there's stamina on his dam side. He also has a real jumping pedigree and an old fashioned one.
From 114, he obviously has to improve in this sort of grade of race, but he's unexposed and with five places I am taking a chance on him at a price of 11/112.00.
Over the fences and another of the Extra Place Specials on the Sportsbook and that brings into play Gavin Cromwell's Final Orders, a winner of this race 12 months ago.
Success in the race last season came off 140 and that was Final Orders' fifth win on the spin at that stage and was a most progressive chaser who was thriving. Indeed, this trainer Cromwell commented afterwards that he had tremendous scope for fences, and the Leopardstown ones do take a bit of jumping.
His two runs this winter have been relatively poor - especially last time out at Cheltenham in the Paddy Power Gold Cup. He was a big price in that and was always behind, and beaten 52L, it's a race just to scrub out and start again.
With a good strike-rate over fences he can hopefully outrun his odds and Cromwell also won this race in 2017 with Elusive Ivy.
