Emma Lavelle's Gold Link is still unexposed as a chaser and is taken to follow up his recent Stratford win in what is a fascinating race to end Friday's Bangor card.
A fairly useful hurdler who racked up four consecutive runner-up finishes over the smaller obstacles, Gold Link appeared to be making a promising start on chasing debut at Cartmel in May, travelling really well in the main but finishing weakly.
That prompted a second breathing operation (he'd also had one in 2021) before his next start but he didn't get very far in that outing at Worcester, coming to grief at the second fence.
However, the 7-y-o put it all together last time, sauntering home eight lengths clear of Sophosc, showing that his most recent breathing op had had a very positive effect.
He'll take plenty of stopping in his bid to defy a 7-lb penalty if in the same sort of form here.
This is an interesting novice contest, and one that looks a three-horse race on paper, with Elegancia and Ribal the most favoured in the market at the time of writing.
However, that pair have now had nine chances between them and I much prefer to side with the once-raced filly Esmeray.
A daughter of Sea The Moon, Ralph Beckett's charge showed plenty when third in a similar contest at Newbury on debut, producing a promising effort despite showing signs of greenness.
The winner of that race was Tony Montana, who wasn't disgraced when fourth in a strong Goodwood handicap earlier this week, and Esmeray looks sure to improve with that initial experience under her belt.
I'm expecting her to take a step forward here and she would appear to have more progression in her than the other pair towards the head of the betting.
