The weather has hardly been on the kind to us recently and the south looks set for another bucketload of rain today. There's a better story up north where Doncaster might evade the showers, but we still have soft conditions on Town Moor.
A couple of the races with youngsters appeal, starting with the 15:40 7f Novice Stakes.
This has provided some good sorts in recent seasons, with the last three renewals seeing the winners go on to record official ratings in advance of 100.
Charlie Appleby has two, including the favourite Musical Act but his stablemate Stormy Waves could be the answer at a much bigger price.
The 2yo cost plenty which goes without saying, but he holds experience from a debut at the track 27 days ago. He was green in a race where the winner had the benefit of a run (and was clearly well regarded), but Stormy Waves was well backed in the market.
Appleby has a good record with his juveniles at Donny with a win and placed record of 21% and 48%. The experience in soft conditions (and with a pedigree allied for stamina) look worth taking a chance on against a newcomer.
The following 16:15 Novice for 3yo fillies over 1m4f will be more attritional, and two of the horses with experience are rated 84 and 85 respectively, so set a high enough standard.
Cherry is one of those with three runs under her belt, and should get the trip on pedigree, but she was beaten at Windsor last time at 4/111.36, so I can happily leave her alone.
It's the sort of race I like, and with John Gosden's newcomer Alrashaka as a Frankel, she looks one for stamina notebooks, as the Frankels gallop for fun.
Indeed, the sire has a superb 36% record at Doncaster over 1m4f from his 11 runners thus far, and her dam Rumoush has produced four excellent horses from her five runners as a gold standard Shadwell broodmare.
At 5/16.00 with the stamina stats, I am backing her to go well from a drifting price of 4/15.00.
