Moon to shine bright on handicap debut
Back Moon Watch @ 6.05/1 in the 14:05 at Haydock
Nostrum was a super winner yesterday of the Group 3 Superlative for the column, taking the tally to 24 single winners in the run, but the double was missed as Tarhib finished third, so we hope to rectify that with a multiple for a top Friday of action. Good racing everywhere. Tarhib needs soft ground.
Haydock will start us off and Moon Watch in the 14:05 looks well treated for a handicap debut in a 0-90.
The 3yo won a Nottingham maiden in June despite looking green and tardy.
He has since finished second at Newcastle and Kempton carrying penalties and was turned over twice as favourite - hitting 1.330/100 and 1.51/2 in-running in those two losses.
The head carriage wasn't exactly convincing last time behind the expensive Dukeman, but that was a three-runner race and he'll be happier in this bigger field at a stronger pace.
I am slightly surprised his trainer John Gosden hasn't rolled out the headgear dice, but with Benoit De La Sayette's claim, he can make an impact from 89.
Gosden has a 21% win record with 3yos at Haydock and a 54% place record, but with 5/1, we will go win only. It's also an Extra Place Special on the Sportsbook.
The dam of Moon Watch - Moonlight Cloud was the horse who famously nearly beat Black Caviar at Royal Ascot in 2012. I was there that day, an afternoon of high drama. No such dramas will do for me at Haydock, and Moon Watch is the first winner from that mare out of her four horses.
Strong stats for Saeed point to a big run from Strong
Back Stand Strong @ 2.757/4 in the 18:15 at Newcastle
Saeed bin Suroor's stats at Newcastle this season are not be ignored - with the trainer 4-5 at 80% showing a level stakes profit of +8.12.
Stand Strong has been well backed today on the Sportsbook with the 9/4 not lasting long at all, but we'll take the 7/4 to hopefully see us over the line for the second leg.
He shaped very well at Salisbury in July behind subsequent Group 2 winner Marbaan - who is now rated 109 and the fifth boosted the form too with a win after.
The Godolphin 2yo was outpaced on the quick ground over 7f, stepping up in distance with a kinder surface over 1m armed with a good draw towards the nearside makes him a good bet today. He was even better at 9/4!
He is by Cracksman, and this is only his second ever runner at Newcastle.
