Fowler set for her second winner in a week with Doyenna
Back Doyenna @ 8.515/2 in the 19:30 at Roscommon
A third and a fourth was the closest we got yesterday for the double quest as both ran quite well without being good enough. Miss Fourie ran more like Tommy than Tyson on Monday sadly, so we head to Connacht this evening for the jumping card at Roscommon.
Trainer Lorna Fowler went into the column's good books with Politesse at the weekend, and the yard have a good chance of another success with Doyenna in the 2m 19:30 Maiden Hurdle.
She arrives into this off the back of a personal best third last time out, showing clear improvement on her two previous runs to get to within a length of Barbaha Queen on yielding.
The 5yo mare had previously ran very well when fourth on debut at Tramore, and also fourth on her second start. She very much went into the notebook at Ballinrobe in May where she fared best of those coming from off the pace as the winner made all.
I am a fan of any Doyen progeny, as they are usually built well, strong types that stay. Her pedigree is a good one too as a relation to the classy Woodlands Opera, and with a Presenting mother, the better ground tonight could unlock some further improvement.
I would be surprised if she wasn't good enough to place, and she's an each-way price at 15/2.
Smith yard form a good pointer to Lucailem's chance
Back Lucailem @ 5.04/1 in the 20:00 at Roscommon
There was a time when Sam Ewing was tipped for great things on the Flat when he burst onto the scene as a highly-rated apprentice, but jumping has always been his first love as his father Warren was a champion point-to-point to racer.
The Ballyclare rider has a good chance to end his wait for his first winner of the season with Lucailem.
The 6yo had shown very little in his first five starts, but he found some improvement for the decent ground at Tipperary when upped to 3m for the first time in May when finishing second.
That was his first run for 300 days with the headgear applied, and while no match for a winner that relished the ground, it was easily his best effort and saw out the distance well.
He was shorter in the market just 14 days later at the same track and finished a well beaten third behind Sweet Sting. To his credit he plugged on from off the pace and his jumping was sound enough.
Perhaps the quick turnaround of just two weeks could have have been a factor, and a nice break of 75 days ahead of today offers no excuses on that front.
Co. Meath trainer Matthew Smith has had three winners from his last eight runners and Lucailem has an extra furlong tonight.
This is also an Extra Place Special race on the Sportsbook and with the new option of playing two to place in the same race, backing Lucailem and Lessofdnegatvity (who finished second last time) pays out 4.53 on the four places multiple.
