- Niven hurdling debutant looking for a perfect start
- Guy can go one place better than last year
- Al Dudman is backing an 11/1 Sportsbook double at Market Rasen on Saturday
Rouge to keep it in the family for Niven
Back Ontherouge @ 2.56/4 in the 13:52 at Market Rasen
Haydock resembled the Triple X Motorsport Swamp at the Louisiana Mudfest yesterday, and Whitehaven did ever so well to finish second, while Air Raid has questions now. I didn't mind the drift on him out to 12/1 (and double his morning price), but he emptied rapidly.
Saturday's high-class action is at Ascot, and there are plenty of selections from the tipping team on Champions' Day to be found including the Betfair offer for the Long Distance Cup by clicking here, but I am hoping to chisel out a profit with a couple of reasonably short prices at Market Rasen.
Ontherouge faces little in terms of opposition in the 13:52 2m Maiden Hurdle and he should have no trouble coming back for his first run of the season considering he looked a good prospect on his bumper debut at Sedgefield last January - winning by 17L on good to soft, although parts of the ground were more chewed up down the centre.
Callum Bewley rode him that day from the front and explored the stands' rail, but he whizzed into the straight and maintained a strong gallop all the from from the turn to relentlessly kick on. While the steady pace early on wasn't strong his finishing speed was around 112% and ran an impressive sectional of 12.56 seconds from 2f to 1f - over second quicker than anything else in the race.
The 4yo subsequently ran in a decent-looking Class 2 NHF finishing second to Nicky Henderson's Bold Reaction - who potentially could be quite good. Ontherouge was a little keen in front but the gallop was more searching than at Sedgefield, and I don't think he will mind switching to a sharp track such as the Rasen.
His trainer Peter Niven is 2-6 at 33% recently and while Tom Midgley might be slightly cold without a winner from his last 18 rides, his 5lb claim for the selection's hurdles' debut could give him the edge.
Niven trained Ontherouge's mother Simply Rouge and the relation Clever Cookie - and both were winners at Market Rasen so he'll be going down a tried and trusted route at this venue. Hopefully he's a decent northern prospect for the team.
Don't give up on Guy just yet for a Rasen return
Back Guy @ 4.7515/4 in the 15:37 at Market Rasen
Guy is a most frustrating horse and those that backed him last season in his run of five second places from six runs would have been feeling a bit miffed. All five of those he traded a odds-on in-play with a series of short ones at 1.364/11, 1.321/3, 1.152/13, 1.4840/85 and 1.728/11. It doesn't call for Jim Bergerac to see if he travels well in his races.
He finished runner-up in the race last term behind a Max McNeill-owned horse, who has a runner in this year's renewal, and I backed Guy and felt very comfortable throughout that race with the way he travelled.
Nigel Twiston-Davies' chaser signed off last term with a couple of....guess what? Seconds. However, both were over 3m and one was behind the win machine Minella Trump, and I am not convinced about Guy over 3m.
Guy's mum is Sept Verites - French for seven truths, so we don't win his seventh second place as that could gives us the truth.
Favourite Tamaroc Du Mathan was a drifter this morning out to 5/2, and you can click here to read what his trainer Paul Nicholls has to say on his chances too.
