Pontefract's season begins on Tuesday in testing ground

Wreckless Eric was an easy single winner for Alan yesterday and he looks at two races on Tuesday with a double at Pontefract and Wolverhampton...

Pontefract - 14:45: Back Maxident

A warm welcome to Pontefract for the season for the lid lifter and first of the season, and also a chance to hear from one of my favourite clerks in Norman Gundill.

We're looking at testing ground today with heavy in the description at the home of the broken bridge and the first bet lines up in the Jamaican Flight Handicap over 2m2f, and the trip in the going will sort a few out.

Maxident will like the going for sure, and he was a wide margin winner at Leicester on his debut last term in April. It turned out to be a woeful race in beating a Godolphin horse by 50L and he was completely unfancied in a field of three, but he looked an all out galloper with a fair bit of stamina.

His second appearance under a penalty saw him defeated, but it came over shorter and quicker ground.

Following a break in the midpoint of the season he was completely outclassed in three runs and looked a social runner on Champions Day to round off a season that promised a lot, and in the end delivered very little.

I am looking forward to exploring the trip today with him at 2m2f as he is by Nathaniel, and the sire has a superb record here at Pontefract with win and placed percentages of 26% and 45% from his 42 runners.

He's off 79 and his mark has regressed, but he's unexposed and the market was very much with him this morning as in one swift swoop he was cut from 11/43.75 into 13/82.63 to top the betting.

Wolverhampton - 18:00: Back Roland Garros

Another son of Nathaniel looks interesting at Wolverhampton this evening in the 1m2f Maiden, and John Gosden's Roland Garros was pretty weak in the market going out to 7/18.00 this morning on the Sportsbook, but that looks too big for a horse that should stay the trip.

In fact Gosden is rolling the Wolverhampton dice twice here as he trains the favourite in King's Coronation, but backing that at 5/42.25 doesn't make much appeal and he did look in need of the experience on his debut run.

That could be the case with Roland Garros, but the price compensates that, and one of his relations Atlantic Sun peaked as a 3yo with a rating in the three figures and also acted on the All-Weather.

Gosden does well with his runners here over this sort of trip with some impressive numbers, 28% win and 53% placed from 102 runners.

Roland Garros' dam Robema has also produced four individual winners from her six offspring.
