Daily Racing Multiple: Butler and Breeze to go well for Tuesday double

flat action Catterick
Alan is heading to the Flat for his second pick of the day and soft ground could be key

Alan Dudman is looking forward to seeing Young Butler's chasing debut at Chepstow on Tuesday, and Bay Breeze should love soft ground at Catterick for a 23/1 Sportsbook double...

  • Hoganville a 3/1 winner yesterday
  • Bay Breeze is confident pick with soft conditions at Catterick
  • Al Dudman is backing a 23/1 Sportsbook double on Tuesday across Chepstow and Catterick

I'll get you Butler in the winners' enclosure

Back Young Butler @ 3.7511/4 in the 15:45 at Chepstow

A win and second yesterday for the column and Hogan was most certainly our hero with a battling win. Hexham form again! The Kalooki Kid was beaten into second for the 1-2 on the day, but we cannot really complain with a 13L defeat. His trainer Nicky Richards had a good day and it was ever so pleasing to see some of his young horses stay well yesterday at Ayr.

I just picked the wrong Richards' runner.

A good-quality Novices' Handicap Chase awaits at Chepstow, and it finally looks as though they have some rain and softer ground.

Emma Lavelle's rookie Young Butler looks to have the tools to make a chaser, and looked a real old-fashioned type at Exeter last season when competing in a handicap for the first time over 2m7f in soft conditions. He was out on his feet in a brutal test there, but he finished an honourable second that day.

Physically he had the look of a chaser, and after a short campaign over hurdles we get our wish. And with the minerals for chasing, we should get a decent run out of him. As the legendary Viv Richards said: "If a young man has the shots I can teach him defence. If he ain't got the shots, then he is no good."

I loved Viv.

Young Butler won at Plumpton on ground that looked quicker than ideal last January as a novice hurdler, but he was in trouble and had to be stoked up and cajoled. Once his stamina kick in though, he stayed well. I also loved his attitude off the final turn when under pressure as he squeezed between horses and forced his way through.

He looks a generous type in terms of giving, and he could trade higher in the run. Chepstow could suit him down to the ground, and he did win his Maiden Hurdle here in late 2021.

Rain key to Bay Breeze chances

Back Bay Breeze @ 6.05/1 in the 16:30 at Catterick

Bay Breeze appeared in one of my tipping columns what seems like a long time ago, in fact it was April at Ripon in soft ground and he looked a horse well ahead of his mark that day.

Since then he has rocketed up to 81 at one stage (from 67 at Ripon), but crucially he looked a horse who loved the rain. Eight of his nine runs since have on good or good to firm, and when he finally had his soft last time, he finished second at Beverley over 5f.

The 5f looked too sharp for him and he was staying on well, but the jockey explored the stands' side that day and was the nearest to the rail as the field were spread right across the track. The softer ground was down the centre and inside, so it was a move that didn't pay off - of sorts.

He has been lowered 2lb to 77, but he's a better horse with soft as he travelled so well at Ripon earlier in the campaign.

Trainer Tim Easterby has some pretty horrible stats at Catterick this term; with a 5-93 record. A 5% win percentage in 2022 is well down on his 10% over five seasons, so we have to face the numbers and come out on top today.
