Moon Phases is overpriced at Perth
She's My Shadow had shown a fairly good level of ability in points and she built on that with a promising run on rules debut at this track earlier this month.
She tracked Casa No Mento from an early stage and while she never quite looked like putting in a significant challenge to that rival in the home straight, she finished a clear second.
There's nothing of the quality of Casa No Mento in this field and I think the step back up in trip will suit She's My Shadow as she looked a little short of a turn of foot over two miles. A repeat of the prominent tactics used that day will also likely help her cause today and she looks to have a good chance if the run doesn't come too soon. Any 4/15.00 or bigger appeals.
Smugglers Haven returns to action after a 176-day break in the same race having shown some promise on her rules debut at Stratford in November.
She was a bit keen under restraint early on before settling down at the head of the main pack. She made headway to track the leaders turning down the back straight and she moved into a leading line of three coming down the mound but she didn't have much left turning the final bend and weakened quickly, eventually being left to finish third by the fall of Drumlee Spud at the last.
Smugglers Haven was up against some decent rivals that day and I think she ran well considering the ground would have been softer than ideal and her early keenness. I think the drop back in trip and quicker ground today could see her in a better light and she could take a step forward from that run.
There is a concern that she's been off since and she might need the run but it might be that they were just keeping her away from testing conditions. Any 14/115.00 or bigger appeals.
Moon Phases makes his rules debut in the bumper at Perth having shaped well on debut in an Irish maiden in November.
He was always towards the head of the main pack behind runaway leader Castle Swan and he went into a share of the lead early in the back straight for the final time. He jumped three out in front and was driven along to maintain his advantage. He was joined at two out by Patter Merchant and looked quite green under pressure before weakening after the last to finish fourth.
The winner and third have since won bumpers while the fifth ran respectably in a bumper last week. The manner in which Moon Phases travelled for a long way suggests that he could have the necessary speed for this test and he's likely to have mentally progressed for that experience too.
It might be that he will be seen to better effect next season over middle distances over hurdles but I think he has a good chance to get off the mark on rules debut and any 5/16.00 or bigger appeals.
