  • Good run on sole hunter chase start

  • Various doubts over rivals

  • Haven't Time is overpriced at Taunton

  • Taunton - 16:10 - Back Haven't Time

It's an interesting hunter chase at Taunton this afternoon with horses having questions to answer for various reasons.

It was no surprise that Macklin was backed as soon as the market opened last night as that is inevitably what happens with a horse that has been running well in points. He's a smooth traveller and won comfortably on his first start of the season at Milborne St Andrew when easily picking off Highway Jewel on the run-in.

The ground is a slight concern for him and he's quite small so there has to be a doubt over whether he will be as effective over fences under rules as he is in points.

Lalor ran respectably on his return to action from a 670-day break at Wincanton but he does have an 8lb penalty which could leave him vulnerable. My Reprieve ran well on her pointing debut at Chipley Park last month but she is another with an 8lb penalty, was inconsistent towards the end of her time in France and doesn't have the benefit of having Jack Andrews in the saddle today. So there's doubt over whether she can build on that performance.

It's no surprise that the big prices about Singapore Saga went early this morning despite the negative of going right-handed. There's another runner, however, who is still a big price and makes some appeal.

Haven't Time hasn't run since April last year when finishing eighth in a handicap hurdle for Kerry Lee and he is now back in the care of his owner, Sarah McQueen, for whom he ran well on his only start in a hunter chase at Ludlow in January 2022. He was still in contention when falling at the last that day in a race that was of similar quality to the one he contests today.

He did take quite a heavy fall and was off for nearly a year after that before running over hurdles for Lee. He didn't show much first time but I thought he ran ok on his two starts after that, travelling well for a long way on his handicap debut at Chepstow before being left behind early in the home straight.

He's had long absences at various stages in his career so I'm not too concerned that he's been off for a long time since then, particularly since he may need soft ground now and was going back to his owner for a pointing/hunter chase campaign. The ground is in his favour today. He also has the benefit of the promising Huw Edwards taking off 5lb.

It may be that Haven't Time isn't as good as he was and will find this too tough on his return to action but, in a race where there are doubts aplenty, I think he's a little overpriced and any 20/121.00 or bigger appeals.
