Sergio Garcia

Sergio Garcia was born on January 9th 1980 in the Castellon province of Spain. Under the tutelage of his father Victor, he began playing golf at the age of three. As a youth he was classed as a prodigal talent, and at the age of 15 he became the youngest player to make the cut in a European Tour, at the 1995 Turespana Open Mediterranea. He also became the youngest winner of the European Amateur Open in the same year. He turned professional in 1999 after shooting the lowest amateur score at the 1999 Masters.

At the 1999 PGA Championship, Garcia came close to winning a major. Locked in a duel with Tiger Woods, Garcia finished second with a score of 10-under. Woods won with 11 under.

His performance was capped off by a brilliant blind recovery shot that made the green despite the ball being obstructed by a tree. The Majors remain the only victory absent from the decorated Garcia resume. He finished tied-second in the 2008 PGA Championship, two shots off winner Padraig Harrington. His best performance in the US Open came in 2005 when he finished tied-third, finishing five shots behind winner Michael Campbell. However, the 2007 Open was the closest Garcia came to claiming a maiden title. He had a ten-foot putt for the title but the ball lipped the rim, meaning that he had to settle for a play-off with old adversary Padraig Hamilton, who won the four-hole play-off by a stroke.

Away from the Majors, Garcia has had unprecedented success; he has eight tournament wins on the PGA Tour and 10 wins on the European Tour. With European earnings of €18,433,688 he is the ninth most successful player in the history of the tour and with $32,833,713 on the PGA Tour he is the tenth most successful player on the PGA Tour.
When it comes to the Ryder Cup, Sergio Garcia is the man. He was selected for the 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006,2008 and 2012 teams and holds an incredible record of 14 wins, 6 losses, and 4 draws, winning a total of 16 points for Europe, in turn helping Europe to win the Ryder Cup in four of his six appearances.

The ever-present Garcia has spent most of his career in the top 10 of the golf rankings. Between 2000 and 2009 he spent over 300 weeks in the top 10. In 2008 he won the HSBC Champions tournament, and this saw him rise to a career high 2nd place.
