Open champ chanced at huge odds

As highlighted in the FedEx St Jude Championship preview, two of the last three winners have been in their 40s and both went off at a triple-figure price.

Lucas Glover was 42 and a 120.0119/1 chance when he followed up his victory at the Wyndham Championship the week before with a playoff win over 32-year-old Patrick Cantlay and 44-year-old Justin Rose went off at 140.0139/1 12 months ago before he beat the 34-year-old reigning US Open champ, JJ Spaun, in extra time.

There are four men in their 40s in the field this year and all four are trading at a triple figure price - the defending champ, Rose, Adam Scott, Alex Noren and Alex Noren but for my first long-shot pick at TPC Southwind, I'm going for someone that turns 40 in January...

FedEx St Jude Championship bet#1 - Ryan Fox @ 250.0249/1

We haven't seen Ryan Fox since his devastating finish at Royal Birkdale to win the Open Championship so it's difficult to gauge how he'll play this week.

Backing up any win is notoriously tough but backing up a major victory is even tougher but we have seen one man double up in the last 20 years and we've seen numerous solid performances next up from Open winners.

Rory McIlroy followed up his victory at Hoylake with back-to-back victories, in the Bridgestone Invitational and the US PGA Championship, and there have been several top 10s and top five finishes.

Xander Schauffele finished seventh in the 3M Open after he won the Open two years ago and the other five winners over the last six years have played in this event, finishing 20^th, 26^th, 13^th, 31^st and 23^rd, suggesting Fox's most likely finishing position will be in the middle of the pack.

That may well be the case, and he's yet to back up a victory with another next time out, but he has held his form nicely after previous wins and age may be on his side here.

Veterans do well at TPC Southwind so ay 39, Fox ticks that box, and his impressive win at Birkdale can only give him confidence.

Fox has only played here once before, finishing tied for 50^th 12 months ago but he did shoot two rounds in the 60s over the weekend and he came into the event with form figures reading 65-MC-MC.

Fox is generally an 80/181.00 chance on the High Street so the 250.0249/1 available on the Betfair Exchange is massive.

FedEx St Jude Championship bet#2 - Nico Echavarria @ 250.0249/1

Like Fox, Nico Echavarria played TPC Southwind for the first time 12 months ago and he too played better as the week went on.

After opening rounds of 72 and 70 saw him sitting tied for 57^th at halfway, the Colombian shot rounds of 69 and 66 over the weekend to climb up into a tie for 38^th but it's not surprising to see this is a venue that he may like.

The 32-year-old's first PGA Tour win came at the Puerto Rico Open in 2023 and form at Rio Grande holds up nicely here but as highlighted in the preview, the best correlating course is Waialae Country Club, home of the Sony Open.

Hideki Matsuyama, Fabian Gomez, Justin Thomas and David Toms have all won at both TPC Southwind and Waialae Country Club, and Southwind winners, Justin Rose, Lucas Glover, Harris English, Harrison Frazar and Brian Gay, have all also been placed in Hawaii.

Echavarria, who won the Cognizant Classic in March, was beaten in a playoff in the Sony Open last year.

He also contended strongly at the RSM Classic two years ago and that's another event that correlates nicely.

Echavarria played nicely last week to finish 12^th in the Wyndham Championship (shot 62 on Saturday) where he putted superbly, and he too looks a huge price at 250.0249/1.

The 160.0159/1 chance, Jacob Bridgeman, was also carefully considered in Memphis but instead I've picked out one in the week's other event - the Danish Golf Championship on the DP World Tour.

Danish Golf Championship bet - David Horsey @ 200.0199/1

Given the Danish Golf Championship is taking in a brand-new venue for the third year-in-a-row, caution is advised before the off.

We don't have much to go on but as highlighted in the preview, I did wonder if those playing regularly on the HotelPlanner Tour may hold an advantage over the majority of the DP World Tour players, who haven't had a regular event on European soil to play in since the first week of July.

With that in mind, I was happy to take a chance on the 2015 winner of the Danish Golf Championship, David Horsey.

Ove the last month, the 41-year-old, who has won four times in total on the DP World Tour, has finished fifth and 20^th in Germany and third in Estonia and Scotland.

The English have a great record in Denmark and Horsey looks to be in fine fettle with form figures reading 5-20-3-3 on the HotelPlanner Tour.

In a weak event, he looked nicely price at 200.0199/1.
