The Punter's Preview: Hot Hideki nicely priced at 25/126.00

Steve Rawlings: Hideki Matsuyama looks to hold a strong chance this week, and I was more than happy to take the industry-wide best of 25/1 with the Betfair Sportsbook.

Matsuyama has inconsistent Sedgefield form figures reading 15-MC-MC-3-11-MC-MC-MC-19. But he arrives in fair form this time around after a third placed finish in the 3M Open and a fast finishing fifth at the Rocket Classic, where his 64 on Sunday was bettered only by the winner, Michael Thorbjornsen.

Looking at the course correlations, he's never played Keene Trace, but he has four top-eight finishes at Sawgrass and he's a winner of the Sony Open so it's perhaps not surprising that he's already shown some form here.

The putter was a bit cold last week (ranked 47^th for Putting Average and only 59^th for Strokes Gained: Putting) so that's a negative but he putted nicely at the 3M Open, and at the Open Championship the week before where he finished a very respectable 14^th.

His accurate tee game is made for the venue, and he could just be finding form at just the right time with the FedEx St Jude kicking the FedEx Cup Playoffs next week.

Dave Tindall's Each-way Picks: Back Bradley at 50/151.00

Dave Tindall: Lots of elite golfers have a winless year or two in even their recent records so that's why we need to give Keegan Bradley some real credit. The 2025 Ryder Cup skipper has won in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. And with this being August, perhaps it's the most likely month of the year for Bradley to continue the sequence.

The 40-year-old has banked three of his wins in August. That includes the 2011 US PGA Championship and the 2024 BMW Championship.

The other victories have come in late May, June (twice), September and October so he's definitely one who comes on strong later in the year rather than starts it with a flourish. Bradley has dropped some good clues that he could win in 2026, with a 14th place in the Travelers and 15th at last week's Rocket Classic.

In his last four starts the American's SG: Approach rankings show 1st (Open Championship), 5th (Rocket Classic) and 9th (Travelers) so he's been striking his irons superbly.

Find Me a 100 Winner: Two long-shots chanced at 169/1

Steve Rawlings: The three courses that appear to correlate best with Sedgefield Country Club are Keen Trace, Sawgrass and Waialae Country Club and McCarthy has form at all three.

Denny McCarthy was 11^th at Keene Trace back in 2019, he's sat fifth and ninth at the halfway stage of a Players Championship at Sawgrass before finishing 14^th from off the pace there this year, and he was the halfway leader of the Sony Open at Waialae in January last year.

He's yet to get across the line on the PGA Tour but that's not a big negative given the strong record for maidens at this event and he's twice come close, losing in a playoff at the Memorial Tournament in 2023 and the Texas Open in 2024.

The 33-year-old missed the cut last week in the Rocket Classic but that wasn't entirely surprising given he contended strongly the week before, finishing third in the 3M Open behind the exiting young phenom, Jason Koivun.

Sitting at number 84 in the FedEx Cup Standings, McCarthy needs a solo fifth placed finish or better to progress to Memphis and if he can put last week's poor effort behind him, that's certainly possible around a track he clearly likes.

Dave Tindall's First Round Leader Tips: Back Ryan Gerard @ 55/156.00

Plenty of players with strong local connections have flourished in this event so let's begin with Ryan Gerard, a native who went to the University of North Carolina.

Along with some excellent recent form - eighth in the Rocket Classic and ninth on his Open debut - the 27-year-old has been making a series of fast starts.

He had a piece of the first-round lead in back-to-back events when starting out with a 64 at May's Charles Schwab Challenge and a 67 in June's Memorial Tournament.

And in those last two outings, he was fourth after round one at Royal Birkdale and second through the first 18 holes at last week's Rocket Classic.

Course and current form stats

Course Form Pick: The Ryder Cup star Ben Griffin simply loves Sedgefield. Since a fourth place finish on debut in 2022 he has added a top 10 and a top 20 with one missed cut. It's been a bit of a middling year for Griffin so could a return to Sedgefield give him a shot at a tournament win?
