Ryder Cup History

The Ryder Cup is a team golf competition between the USA and Europe which takes place every two years.

It is run by a joint administration made up of the PGA European Tour and the PGA of America.

The venue used for the competition is shared between the two continents in order to make it fair. It was first held in 1927 at the Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts. That took place between the United States and Great Britain. The hosts were able to claim bragging rights that year. GB did bounce back two years later, though, with their maiden victory in Leeds in 1929.

In 1973, Great Britain joined forces with Ireland to take on their rivals, and it wasn't until 1979 that Europe became the opponents to the United States.
English businessman Samuel Ryder first donated the trophy for the competition, and the name has stuck ever since.

All of the players who take part for either team receive no prize money. In fact, it is one of the few high-profile sporting events that can boast that rather charming fact.
The Ryder Cup in 2014 is scheduled to take place at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perth, Scotland. It will then return across the Atlantic two years later at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.

Since 1927, the format has been altered through the years. Up until 1963 it was only a two-day event but now the match between the two continents takes place over three days.
In the morning of day one, four fourballs take place. Then in the afternoon four foursomes are out on the course competing for points.

On day two there are also four fourballs, followed by four foursomes in the afternoon.

Day three is very different as all 12 players are in action at some point in singles. This is usually where the Ryder Cup is either won or lost. The winner is the team with the highest score from these 28 games.

The selection process used by the two teams has also changed over the years. In the early days of the competition a selection committee would choose their squad. However, players can now book their spot via a qualification process. The top nine players in the money list from each continent will earn a place, while the captain of each team will be able to select three wild card players.

The most recent Ryder Cup saw Europe make history, bouncing back from the very jaws of defeat on the final day to secure a famous win.
