Rory Mcllroy was born in Hollywood, County Down, Northern Ireland on the 4th of May 1989. His father could tell he was destined for a golf career after he hit a 40-yard drive at the age of two and by the fact that he begged to go to the local golf course daily.

He won the World Championship for 9-10-year-olds and became the youngest ever member of Holywood Golf Club at the age of seven. At the age of 17 he turned professional.
In his first year on the European tour in 2007, he finished 95th with earnings of €277,255. The 2008 season saw Mcllroy finish with six top-10 placings and a ranking of 79th in the world. At the age of 19, he won his first tournament, the Dubai Desert Classic in February 2009. This took him to 16th in the world. 2009 also saw his first Masters appearance. He finished tied 20th before finishing tied 10th in the US Open. By the end of 2009 Mcllroy had broken into the top 10, ranking ninth in the world.
Mcllroy switched to the PGA Tour in 2010 after finishing at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. A final round of 62 in the QUAIL Hollow Championship on May 2nd saw him become the first player since Tiger Woods to a win a PGA Tour event prior to turning 21. In July, he shot a record 9-under-par 63, the lowest round in St Andrews' 150-year history. He finished tied third at the Open and tied third at the 2010 PGA Championship.
Mcllroy finally won a major in 2011, winning the US Open with a score of 16-under-par, beating second place Jason Day by eight strokes.
Mcllroy further entrenched his name into the history books when he won the 2012 PGA Championship at the age of 23. He became the youngest multiple major champion since Seve Ballesteros in 1980, and the sixth youngest of all time. He also broke Jack Nicklaus' record winning margin of seven, winning with eight strokes in hand.
Mcllroy struggled in 2013. He endured a torrid time at all of the Majors and only managed to win one tournament, the Australian Open.
The Northern Irish lad has represented Europe twice in the Ryder Cup, helping them to victory in 2010 and 2012. In 2010, Mcllroy won and lost in foursomes and halved with Stewart Cink in the singles. In the 2012 Ryder Cup Mcllroy won and lost both his foursome and four-ball matches, but he did win his singles match against Keegan Bradley.
