The Irishman is a member of both the European Tour and the PGA Tour. He has been voted Player of the Year on both sides of the Atlantic.

Harrington's maiden major came in 2007 at the Open Championship. He was able to defend the Claret Jug a year later in 2008, while also winning the US PGA Championship in the same season.

The Dublin born golfer turned professional in 1995. That came after what was a successful amateur career for him, including success in the Walker Cup that year.

He joined the European Tour in 2006 and did not have to wait long for his first tournament win, which came in May. Harrington was successful in the Spanish Open when he finished four strokes ahead of Gordon Brand Jnr, with a combined score of -16 (272).

Up until 2004 he won at least once in each season on the European Tour. Then, in 2005, he joined the PGA Tour for the first time in his career.

Harrington won twice in America in his opening season there. In March he landed the Honda Classic following a playoff win against Vijay Singh and Joe Ogilvie. His second PGA Tour win arrived in June in the Barclays Classic. This time he lifted the trophy after 72 holes as he finished one shot ahead of the field.

After some near misses in previous years, the Irishman finished top of the European Tour Order of Merit in 2006. Although he only won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in October, he had a consistent year that saw him in contention in several events.

Harrington's first Open Championship came at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland in 2007. He had to see off Sergio Garcia in a playoff after the pair were locked at -7 at the end of the final round on the Sunday. He was one shot better off following the four additional holes against the Spaniard.

In 2008 he had done all the hard work going into the final few holes on the Sunday at Royal Birkdale. He eventually finished four shots clear as he won the links competition once again.

The following month Harrington continued his good form in Michigan at Oaklands Hills Country Club. His -3 (277) score was good enough for a two stroke win ahead of Garcia and Ben Curtis.
