Born in Hemel Hempstead in 1986, the Englishman has been the number one ranked golfer in the world for a total of 55 weeks.

He currently resides in the United States, where he predominantly features in PGA Tour events, but does travel back to Europe for a number of events taking place there throughout the season.

2011 has been Donald's best year to date in his career. He finished the campaign top of the PGA Tour money list and also headed the equivalent in Europe, known as the Race to Dubai.

At an early age, the Englishman joined the College Prospects of America. This helped him to gain a golf scholarship at Northwestern University in 1997.
In 2001, Donald turned professional. His debut tournament was the Reno-Tahoe Open on the PGA Tour. He was unable to make the cut but he did receive a further six invitations that year.

After finishing in a tie for 23rd at the Q-School, he earned himself a tour card for 2002. His debut tournament win arrived in the Southern Farm Bureau Classic. He finished the event on -15, one shot ahead of his nearest rival Deane Pappas.

Donald's first success on the European Tour was at the Scandinavian Masters in August 2004. The margin of victory on that occasion was five strokes.

The English golfer went close to break his major duck at the 2005 Masters where he was in contention on the final day on his debut in the Augusta National Club event. He did have to settle for a tie for third in the end and he was very satisfied with this outcome.

Top 10 finishes have come since then in all three of the other majors, which include the US Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship.

After winning the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in England in May 2011, Donald claimed the number one spot in the world rankings. He held that position through to March 2012 at which point he was overtaken by Rory McIlroy.

2011 got even better for Donald as he finished the year top of both the European Tour's Race To Dubai list and the PGA Tour's money list. He was the first player in history to achieve the double in the same season. His achievement earned him a number of awards including the PGA Tour Player of the Year.
