Rocket Mortgage Classic: Birdie-fest expected in Detroit

Steve Rawlings: "We've only had four editions and it's been a mixed bag so far. The first and third editions were dominated by outsiders but the 2020 winner, Bryson DeChambeau, has won eight times on the PGA Tour (including the 2020 US Open) and three of the top-four last year can be described as top-class.

"This will be a low scoring event and making up lots of ground will be tough. Lashley won the first edition wire-to-wire, DeChambeau and Cam Davies were never far away and Finau almost led from start to finish.

"DeChambeau sat tied for fourth and one off the lead after round one, tied third and still just one back after round two and he sat tied for second with a round to go. Davies trailed by five in a tie for 21st after round one but he sat sixth and two back at halfway and he was just one off the lead with a round to go.

"Finau was leading after rounds one and three, he sat second at halfway but was only one adrift of Taylor Pendrith and those two were tied for the lead after round three and the pair were four clear of the rest...

"I'm in complete agreement with Dave Tindall re the chances of Taylor Moore (see below), and he's a great price on the exchange at 80.0."

Rocket Mortgage Classic Each-Way Tips: Come back for Moore at 50/1

Dave Tindall: "We're on a Donald Ross track this week - a 7,370-yard par 72 - and that's when things become interesting when building the case for Moore.

"Taking out this year's PGA Championship (although he made the cut), Moore has played three non-Majors on Ross tracks and cracked the top 10 in all of them.

"As well as his top six here, he was fifth in last year's Wyndham Championship at Sedgfield while in May 2021 Moore took ninth in the Knoxville Open at Ross's Holston Hills.

"Strokes Gained: Putting has been key in the four editions here as you might expect for a birdie-fest so Moore's ranking of 27th for SGP this season bodes well.

"At 50/1, the 29-year-old, who sits 28th in the FedEx Cup standings, is well worth an each-way bet."

Rocket Mortgage Classic 2023: Course and current form stats

Course notes: "Opened in 1916, the North Course is situated approximately seven miles north of Downtown Detroit and has undergone a series of upgrades in recent years.

"The club was chosen to host the 1941 Ryder Cup, but the outbreak of World War II scuppered that. A traditional parkland venue with tree-lined fairways, the North Course has putting surfaces that are smaller than the Tour average and also reasonably undulating.

"Water is only an issue on one hole - the 14th - while the course is one of the flattest in top level professional golf. This week's layout uses 17 holes from the North Course and one from the South...

"Rickie Fowler 14/1 is certainly on a roll at present, having posted a dozen top-20 finishes during the first six months of 2023. Started the year outside of the top-100, but is now ranked 35 in the world."

British Masters: Campillo can cash in again

Steve Rawlings: "Last year's winner, Thorbjorn Olesen, won courtesy of a red-hot putter and he only ranked 60th for Greens In Regulation but four of the placed players ranked inside the top-six for GIR and Richard Bland ranked number one for Driving Accuracy and second for GIR two years ago.

"The two playoff protagonists at the UK Championship in 2020, Rasmus Hojgaard and Justin Walters, ranked tied sixth for GIR and in behind them, Martin Kaymer, who finished tied third, ranked second for GIR, with Craig Howie (T5) and Calum Hill (T9), ranking fourth and fifth for that stat. The two players tied for third in 2021, Miko Korhonen and Dave Coupland, ranked third and fifth for GIR...

"Jorge Campillo has missed his last two cuts at the Belfry, but he was seventh here at the UK Championship in 2020 and he looks worth chancing at 55.0.

"The Spaniard signed off last week's BMW with an eye-catching bogey-free six-under-par 66 to climb up into a tie for 14th and that was two strokes better than anyone else in the field could muster.

"He's already a winner this season at another tree-lined venue, Muthaiga Golf Club (Kenya Open), and with great Greens In Regulation and Scrambling figures, Campillo will contend this week if he can roll a few more putts in."

British Masters First-Round Leader Tips: 100/1 Walters worth a wager

Dave Tindall says: "Justin Walters was a factor for all four days in this event last year, eventually finishing in third.

"He'd started his bid with a 68 to sit sixth after 18 holes and close observers of the South African may have noted that it wasn't the first time he'd hit page one of the leaderboard here.

"In the 2020 UK Championship, also held at The Belfry, Walters led after rounds one, two and three before finishing runner-up.

"And on two other occasions on English soil he's finished the opening lap in the top five. As for current form, Walters has made his last six cuts, has placed 21st and 26th in his last two events and in one of those (Scandinavian Mixed), he was seventh after day one."

British Masters Each-Way Tips: Take Ramsay the raider at 50/1

Matt Cooper: "Back in 2009 the Scotsman Richie Ramsay, nearly a year into his journey in the pro ranks, headed south of the border for his first professional start in England and carded a Thursday 63 at Worsley Park to share the first round lead in a Challenge Tour event.

He finished ninth that week and it was the first hint that he loved a raid on the auld enemy. Since then he has recorded top 10 finishes at Wentworth (twice), Close House, Hillside and the London Club.

"Last year he added third place here at The Belfry, a third cut made in his three course appearances. In fact, he spent all week in the top four and traded at a low of 1.4 on the Betfair Exchange.

"A few weeks later he returned to England - to Hillside, in fact - and he claimed victory in the Cazoo Classic."

Find Me a 100 Winner: Hidalgo might just take to the Belfry

Steve Rawlings: "C.T Pan, who also missed the cut, is trading at virtually the same price. He was backed at 210.0 last week and he's trading at 200.0 at the time of writing.

"Admittedly, having finished fourth and third in his two previous outings, last week's weekend off was a bigger fall from grace but given he has form at another Donald Ross track (he was second in the Wyndham Championship in 2018), I thought he was worth chancing again at 200.0 around the Ross-designed Detroit Golf Club.

"He's missed the cut on the two previous occasions he's played here previously but he has two top-12s at another venue that appears to correlate - the Country Club of Jackson - which is home to the Sanderson Farm Championship, and he's a very good putter on his day."

British Masters 2023: Course and current form stats

Course Notes: "The Belfry is a traditional British parkland venue. The Brabazon demands good course management skills, along with an ability to read its many undulating putting surfaces.

"Located close to the M6 Toll Road in Sutton Coldfield, and approximately eight miles from the centre of Birmingham, the Brabazon is a flat course that is well-bunkered, has narrow fairways, with water coming into play on 10 holes.

"Solid, accurate, ball-strikers, with a strong tee-to-green pedigree, are more likely to prosper this week than those who rely on hot putting streaks...

"Min Woo Lee 10/1 travels to England on the back of two successive top-10s in the United States. These include a tie-for-fifth at the US Open. The young Australian is making his third competitive appearance at the Brabazon Course."
