Weather forecast for Thursday
It's mostly cloudy at the former Ryder Cup venue with temperatures in the mid-60s for most of the golfing day. Winds speeds are around 10mph but could gust towards 20.
The main thing to note is that there appears to be no weather advantage which makes it a free hit in terms of which part of the draw to pick from.
Justin Walters was a factor for all four days in this event last year, eventually finishing in third.
He'd started his bid with a 68 to sit sixth after 18 holes and close observers of the South African may have noted that it wasn't the first time he'd hit page one of the leaderboard here.
In the 2020 UK Championship, also held at The Belfry, Walters led after rounds one, two and three before finishing runner-up.
And on two other occasions on English soil he's finished the opening lap in the top five.
As for current form, Walters has made his last six cuts, has placed 21st and 26th in his last two events and in one of those (Scandinavian Mixed), he was seventh after day one.
There's plenty to like for the 100/1101.00 shot who tees off at 08.50.
I've had some good success with Andy Sullivan in this column and, given his local connections, I'd kick myself if he made another quick start here and I wasn't on.
It's one thing having local knowledge but Sullivan has put it to good use in his three starts at The Belfry, finishing ninth in the 2020 UK Championship and sixth in the 2021 British Masters.
He was 12th after round one in the latter and 22nd on the Thursday leaderboard in the former.
A reminder that Sullivan has finished first once and second twice in the FRL market in his last eight events.
And back in September, the former Ryder Cup was the first-round leader in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Back Sullivan, a 13.00 starter, to bank another low one on Thursday at 80/181.00.
Edoardo Molinari has been a regular presence on Thursday leaderboards over his last 16 events.
In that run, he's had FRL positions of first, second, fifth, seventh and eighth.
The first came in last week's BMW International Open thanks to a 66, a number he repeated on day three before falling away to finish 18th.
Like Sullivan, Molinari is a former European Ryder Cup player. And, like Sullivan, The Belfry's deeply ingrained association with that event seems to chime well with him.
Molinari finished eighth here in 2021 while last year a 68 put him sixth after day one.
Take the 08.20 starter at 80/181.00.
