Schwartzel turned professional in 2002 at the age of 18, following in the footsteps of many leading South African players and joining the European Tour late that year. In 2005, Schwartzel won the Dunhill Championship in South Africa and claimed first place on the Sunshine Tour's Order of Merit and 52nd on the European Tour's Order of Merit.

Victory in the season-ending Vodacom Tour Championship took him into the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career, reaching 55th in the world rankings in an encouraging 2006. Schwartzel finished first on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit for the third consecutive year in 2007, moving into the world's top-40 for the first time following his victory at the Open de Espana.

After a winless 2009 season, Schwartzel started 2010 by winning two consecutive tournaments on the European Tour, re-entering the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings after slipping out the previous year.

Schwartzel joined the PGA Tour in 2011, beginning the year in winning form after defending his Joburg Open title in January. Schwartzel continued his form into the first major of the year at the Masters, producing a sensational final round 66, including ending his round with a record four consecutive birdies, to seal a two-shot victory ahead of Adam Scott and Jason Day. This handed him his first major title and he also became the third South African to win at Augusta after Gary Player and Trevor Immelman.

Schwartzel followed up his Masters victory with encouraging performances in the three other majors, including a tie for ninth at the U.S. Open and a tie for 12th at the PGA Championship. In December 2012, Schwartzel won the Thailand Golf Championship on the Asian Tour for his first victory since his 2011 Masters win, going on to win the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa, his eighth victory on the European Tour.

Schwartzel may not have enjoyed the greatest of 2013 seasons, but the South African has established himself as one of the world's most consistent players, ending the year ranked 18th in the world.
