The biggest victory of his career so far came in the US Masters in 2012 when he won his first major.

Watson is one of the few left-handed players in the elite of his sport. He is also renowned for being among the longest drivers in the game.

The American turned professional in 2003 and soon joined the Nationwide Tour. In 2005 he was able to finish 21st on the money list, which ensured he qualified for the PGA Tour in 2006.

In his first season on the PGA Tour, he topped the driving distance at 319.6 yards and finished 90th on the money list as a rookie.

He had to wait until 2010 to win his first tournament. It came in the Travelers Championship via a play-off along with fellow Americans Corey Pavin and Scott Verplank. All three players finished on -14 after four rounds in Connecticut. Watson was able to seal the trophy courtesy of a par on the second extra hole.

A year later, two tournament wins helped him to climb up the world rankings. In January 2011, he won the Farmers Insurance Open. This time he won by one stroke ahead of Phil Mickelson. A combined winning score of 272 was enough in California.

In May, he doubled his tally for the season when he won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. After finishing on -15 along with Webb Simpson, the tournament went into a play-off on the Sunday where the big hitter won with a birdie on the second extra hole.

After losing in a play-off of the PGA Championship in 2010, Watson made up for that disappointment by winning the US Masters in 2012 for his first major success. His was able to get past South African Louis Oosthuizen in the sudden death holes after four rounds at Augusta National Golf Club.

The Florida born golfer has taken part in two Ryder Cups for the United States. He was part of the side that was narrowly defeated in 2010 in Newport, Wales. Europe won the competition 14 ½ - 13 ½.

In 2012 Watson and the US looked to be on course for regaining the Ryder Cup when they were 10-6 up going into the singles in the final day. However, the visitors at Medinah battled back to win 14 ½ - 13 ½ once again.
