Mixed fortunes for Magpies
It's been rather snakes and ladders for Newcastle under new boss Matthias Jaissle.
That's reflected by each of their last three wins in all competitions being followed immediately by a loss. That frustrating pattern continued on Thursday night when they followed up a 2-0 Premier League win at Crystal Palace with a 3-1 Carabao Cup loss at Monday night's opponents Everton.
Still, finishing Matchweek 8 in the top half of the table was a decent enough position given a summer of high-profile exits and victory on Monday night could elevate Newcastle to seventh.
Toffees have resilience under Moyes
After going unbeaten in their first six games of the new Premier League season, Everton have now suffered back-to-back defeats.
But here's a stat: the Toffees have never lost three top-flight games in a row under Moyes since 2011.
That's a real testament to his managerial skills. Moyes doesn't let a rot set in and Everton have already started the bouncing back process with that Carabao Cup win over the Magpies.
In addition, the successive league losses were away to Arsenal and home to Chelsea i.e. two of the top four.
There are some big grounds where Moyes' record leaves a lot to be desired.
But that's not the case at St James' Park. As Everton boss, he's won four of his last five visits and that includes the recent road trips in May 2025 (3-2) and February 2026 (1-0).
Everton are underdogs to win this away fixture for the third season running but they'll surely approach it with confidence.
Adding some wider context, the Magpies don't like Mondays. They've suffered recent 4-1 hammerings by both Coventry and Leeds in this slot while the stats show Newcastle have lost 21 of their last 32 Premier League matches on Mondays.
The first goal will be key - Everton have won just one of their last 21 Premier League matches when conceding the opening goal - but if the Toffees get it, they'll be hard to peg back.
A tight win looks most likely so, for the third straight campaign, I'll take Everton to return from Tyneside to Merseyside having won by the minimum margin. That pays 7/24.50.
Back Everton to win by exactly 1 goal
For a Bet Builder, I'm going to start with Everton striker Thierno Barry.
Written off by many as not good enough, the French striker has plundered seven goals in 11 appearances this season.
The criticism comes due to him fluffing too many opportunities but that's an impressive goals-per-game ratio and the key is that Everton's system creates lots of chances for him. In fact, only Erling Haaland has attempted more shots in the Premier League this term.
Barry scored in the 3-2 win at St James' Park last season and also netted in the 3-1 victory over the Magpies on Thursday night.
Back him to score anytime on Monday, which is 15/82.88 as a single.
The second Everton element is James Tarkowski to be shown a card.
He was one of five Toffees players to receive a yellow card on Thursday after a scuffle close to full-time and that could carry over.
The no-nonsense defender has now been booked in three straight matches while he seems to really get stuck in against Newcastle having been cautioned seven times in his 16 matches with the Magpies.
As for Newcastle, in terms of output, Harvey Barnes has made the most impact. He's been part of four goal contributions in eight matches (two goals and two assists).
Three of the four have come at home while he found the net at Crystal Palace last week. Add in Barnes to Score or Assist.
That Bet Builder treble pays 20/121.00.
